1175812 2011-02-07 00:03:00 I am just wondering if anyone treats IT as a interest only and not as a job?

I've done the (hardware) IT training but having 2nd thoughts if I should pursue it as a career.

I have an interest in IT but to me it seems if IT is just IT it doesn't have as much impact as if you are in Corporate Finance/Management. I'm more the type that just use IT as a tool.

1175813 2011-02-07 00:06:00 I'm a PC hardware hobbyist, so I guess I'm with you. I don't really see myself making a lifelong career out of it. qazwsxokmijn (102)

1175816 2011-02-07 00:12:00 IT covers such a wide range these days and there is so much to always learn.

In the end, you get out of any job, what you are prepared to put in.

Its not all plain and easy sailing.

Trouble is with doing it as a interest only, what happens when a person decides they dont want to do it any more - if you supply goods and services and charge, you have to cover warranties for example.

1175817 2011-02-07 00:14:00 Was just a hobby to me about 5 years ago until the opportunity to get a job in it came along. I never considered myself as experienced but it was who you know not what you know at the time....I consider myself lucky to be working for a great company and to have a job i enjoy (most of the time...) 1175819 2011-02-07 00:50:00 Im a Technician\Manager\Consultant - I basically cover everything but are a master of none, which is great for me. I have seen too many people get swashed in a specialist role and stagnant there.
As a technician, i get to do 1st line and backoffice. As IT manager, I get to test new hardware and software and carry out R&D as well as infrastructure planning and migration. As Consultant, I get to go out of the office and mingle with client on the golf course and discuss\plan\implement their company future with IT...

There are heaps of roles in IT, Im lucky to get to do half of them!

1175820 2011-02-07 00:58:00 Yup same here. Altho, I'm not going to pay for something, I already know. Just to get a piece of paper.

And even if I did get some kind of degree, you probably need a car or something. Which is something, that I'm not planning on getting now, or in the future.
