By discounting them from applying, you're saying "Right, we're prepared to go head-to-head against you". I've been told how people may have had their doubts in the past, but nobody can actually tell me how such a move would not be in the best interest of NZ, considering they'd be taking out their biggest and realistically only competitor, not to mention speeding up the time in which NZ gets their faster service, as well as taking control of what the general populace believe to be the only "bad guy" around? |

2011-02-08 12:18:00 | As Telecom will probably subcontract most of the work out we will just be paying them to be the monkey in the middle. | mikebartnz (21) | |
2011-02-08 12:19:00 | Can you expand on that please? What work are they subcontracting out? To whom? | Chilling_Silence (9) | |
2011-02-08 19:05:00 | Once bitten, Twice shy. Its called a learning experience. No no lets all give Telecom a 32nd chance, just because they have been screwing NZ around for well over a decade sidestepping every government move (multiple governments), doesnt mean they dont have our best interests at heart lol I've been told how people may have had their doubts in the past, I know you are a bit of a noob to all this Chilling, but most of us here have seen these dances from Telecom before, over and over.

Doodums to you for having a poor client-focused experience, but the actual physical hardware, design, layout, implementation and more, of the whole sub-LLU rollout has been of world-class standards. That is what the Govt will be buying. The Govt (Chorus2) won't be dealing with *you* as a customer like Telecom Retail (Xtra) have. Chorus have been doing new connections / changeovers in under 24 hours! You're confusing the two issues. Of course, Telecom doesn't have "your best interests at heart". They're a business. They're there to make money. You'd be a fool to suggest that making money isn't their first and foremost priority. That's not to say that customers aren't specifically on the list, but it's just a little further down the chain, behind "making money for shareholders". It seems that people seem to share Chris Bartons sentiments, I must be the only person left in this damn country who's not guided by misdirected emotions. |

2011-02-08 21:33:00 | Apparently Chris Barton was the founding editor of PCW way back when. The more you know! | Siobhan Keogh (16063) | |
2011-02-08 21:42:00 | Why do you ignore the fact that Telecom screwed over every single one of its customers in order to maximize short term profit for its shareholders, There are private companies that don't do this??? :horrified

2011-02-08 22:11:00 | has been of world-class standards . That is what the Govt will be buying . The Govt (Chorus2) won't be dealing with *you* as a customer like Telecom Retail (Xtra) have . Chorus have been doing new connections / changeovers in under 24 hours! You're confusing the two issues . There is nothing "world class" about a old residential Copper network with a Fibre backbone providing rubbish overpriced inconsistent DSL2 into the home . I guess my standards are a lot higher than yours . Your saying Courus "A Telecom NZ company" will be effectively owned by the NZ government to do work on the TELECOM owned network that has a near monopoly providing overpriced so called wholesale onto other ISP's Yea that solves the basic problem of the Telecom monopoly . Cant even "imagine" how this helps the situation . I say just tack on 5Bn onto our modest government debt, roll out FTTD properly and kiss Telecom/corus/corus2/corus3/corus4 goobye which was originally purposed .

2011-02-08 22:24:00 | There have been no Chris Bartons working at PC World, don't know who this guy is! I'm guessing he's a repeat offender? Edit: And yeah, Mighty Ape guy is Simon Barton. Glad to see you've corrected yourself in another post. Next time before you make such categorical statement you should perhaps go to the shelf, pick up one of the red bound copies (they're still there I assume) and read a bit of history. There wouldn't be a PC World without Chris Barton.

2011-02-08 23:03:00 | This is a terrible thread, and I was going to ignore as it serves no useful purpose that I can see. That said, Chris Barton, the founding editor of PC World and whom I have worked with at PC Magazine and the NZ Herald, doesn't deserve being called names like this. He's covered the broadband situation in NZ for well over a decade now and that column is right on the money. What's more, Chris cares about the public good. Why should he receive abuse for that, from people who don't understand the regulatory issues, the history or even the technology behind NZ's broadband? This thread should be deleted. It's embarrassing.
