1175222 2011-02-04 21:59:00 I like the way the world cup has been sold to the NZ public.
We get to supply all the venues for free ( to the IRB ), meaning we cover most of the costs, nearly all the labour associated with it is free by way of volunteers, the opening and closing ceremonies are about to be awarded to an Australian company and a huge chunk of sponsors profits , by way of licensing deals, goes to the IRB also.
The influx of visitors (lol) will last a few short weeks, at best creating a few part time bar jobs.
The economic windfall to NZ is......?
If some poor deluded souls want to pay good money to watch "kick and clap" then good luck to them , but I may punch the first person to ask me how I feel the All Blacks will go.

So how do you feel the all blacks will go?
With that attitude, you are the perfect rugby supporter:D

I don't know how it works but we don't spend that much when we travel in NZ or overseas. Just the accom and then we try to keep cost down by eating at the local areas or as it seems in NZ a lot of tourists by cook at their hostels/motels. I gather that might quite a bit of up market activities though and dining in the cities.

With my photography club, we sat down together and decided on some topics for 2011, someone said what about loss since we have the world cup coming up :D

The other week a local politician for this area, in a meeting trying to promote tourism round here, was quoted in the paper as saying, "They must leave this area wanting more and broke" and that was nothing to do with the World Cup!!

1175228 2011-02-05 02:01:00 Are the All Blacks the NZ national Rugby Team - The owners see them more as a BRAND.

It is no longer sport, it is commercialised entertainment, with the performers being grossly overpaid for their contribution - Disagree on the pay - Is a Rugby Footballer more socially valuable than a surgeon?

Rugby injuries ensure a constant workload for the hospitals in winter and a steady source of customers for the Otara spinal unit.

When I fist came to NZ (1990) I saw a set of statistics that said more money was paid out by ACC than for anything else. Should that have been "than for any other sport"? (Either way it proves a point if true :horrified).

I believe most people, if they are brutally honest, have given up on the AB's winning any World Cup. Personally I think the best explanation of why the AB's appear to "choke" and lose - after doing exceptionally well in games leading up to the WC, is that someone or some people are being paid off. Bribes, corruption, call it whatever. It happens is most all sports. Look at cricket, F1 motor racing, football/soccer, etc.
