Yes. I was thinking on these lines for a case.

1206592 2011-06-06 21:58:00 OK - well what you've got is pretty good. I would say definitely go for an 1155 socket, so a different motherboard and CPU.

Are there any particular requirements you have for a motherboard? And it looks like you want 16GB RAM?

How about something like this...

CPU - Intel Core i7 2600 Sandy Bridge 3.40GHz 8MB 95W LGA1155 4 Core 8 Thread

MBD - ASUS P8P67 EVO REV 3.0 INTEL P67 DDR3 USB3+SATA3 SLI+ CROSSFIRE LGA1155 PCI-E ATX

RAM (x2) - KINGSTON HYPERX 8GB (2X4GB) DDR3-1600 KIT CL9

HDD - SEAGATE BARRACUDA 1TB ST31000524AS 32MB SATA 3 6GB/S (Maybe add an a SSD later)

PSU - SEASONIC M12II BRONZE 520W 80PLUS POWER SUPPLY

GFX - ASUS ENGT430/DI/1GD3(LP) GeForce GT 430 1GB GDDR3 PCI-E

DVD - ASUS DRW-24B3LT 24X DVD WRITER LIGHTSCRIBE SATA

CASE - Gigabyte GZ-X7 ATX Mid Tower Case, Black

OS - Windows 7 Home Premium x64

1206593 2011-06-06 22:16:00 Hi Wratterus,
Approx. cost of components please if possible.
Many thanks.

1206594 2011-06-06 22:32:00 The cost of that lot, including the OS is approximately $1850 from Computer Lounge.

If you shop around you will always be able to get cheaper - but you want to get parts from a reputable store with good after sales service.

And ComputerLounge's prices are pretty good most of the time anyway.

1206595 2011-06-07 01:46:00 Ok, great feedback and food for thought so far - Cheers lads/lasses.

CPU and motherboard do not match? Could you clarify that for me and perhaps suggest a different motherboard that suits the i7 better?

Thank you for the heads up on the corsair PSU PCtek, I will definitely explore it! ;)

Well the graphics card is a huge step up from my ancient ATI Radeon 9550, I thought, and still won't do much gaming anyway ;)

I will steer away from WD black drives based on that feedback - cheers!

I believe the H55 is an 1156 and I could go for 1155, but in all honesty this would see me good for another 6/7 years and then I will have to get a better one for my kids coming of (computer) age!!!

I have considered the SSD drives but at this stage they are waaaaay too expensive compared to plates ones - am I wrong???

Hi, you had a i7 Lynfield CPU and a Sandy Bridge motherboard, different PINs, the Lynfield will not work with SB mobo!

1206596 2011-06-07 22:41:00 Bit late commenting perhaps but I also think you should go sandybridge, even an i5 2500 would be comparable to the i7 you wanted and is a fairly cheap option.

The specs you posted are fine though and I'm sure you would be happy with it - once you find the right motherboard of course :)

One other comment, if you think you might play more games the graphics card may eventually prove to be too weak but if you're happy to turn down details etc it should do the job most of the time.

1206597 2011-06-12 05:28:00 Hi all, sorry for the lateness in responding - mainly due to PC upgrade!!!

Well, I looked very carefully at all your advice and decided to take the plunge wratterus's style - well almost.

This is what I have got

CPU - Intel Core i7 2600 Sandy Bridge 3.40GHz 8MB 95W LGA1155 4 Core 8 Thread

MBD - ASUS P8P67 EVO REV 3.0 INTEL P67 DDR3 USB3+SATA3 SLI+ CROSSFIRE LGA1155 PCI-E ATX

RAM (x2) - KINGSTON HYPERX 8GB (2X4GB) DDR3-1600 KIT CL9

HDD - WD Green Caviar 1.5TB SATA 3

PSU - SEASONIC M12II BRONZE 520W 80PLUS POWER SUPPLY

GFX - ATI Radeon HD 5770 1Gb

DVD - Liteon 24x SATA Dual Layer DVD Writer

CASE - Gigabyte GZ-X7 ATX Mid Tower Case, Black

OS - Windows 7 Home Premium x64 with disk and registration.

Screen - Samsung LED SyncMaster BX2031

$2000.00ish all up.

It has been great fun researching and getting it all together, and it is a great little system too!

Thank you all for your great help.
