1175824 2011-02-07 01:31:00 IT covers such a wide range these days and there is so much to always learn.

In the end, you get out of any job, what you are prepared to put in.

Its not all plain and easy sailing.

Trouble is with doing it as a interest only, what happens when a person decides they dont want to do it any more - if you supply goods and services and charge, you have to cover warranties for example.

If I get hardware for someone usually from Ascent or CL I make sure and give them the receipt and write the manufacturer warranty period on the back of the receipt, so that if I'm not around or available anymore at least they can RMA it if it dies

1175825 2011-02-07 01:38:00 Just as an interest, Don't see myself doing it as a job, so much I have no idea about and no qualifications. Can't afford much these days. Have started to tutor at SeniorNet just last week. Good hobby, lots of fun and gets me out of da house.

A good way to go LL.

I build for people and will honour warranties. Don't do much any more though and it's not something I expect to make a living at especially as I live in a small town.

1175827 2011-02-07 02:13:00 Hi Nomad. Don't pursue IT as a career if you are not passionate about it. Look at the things that you are passionate about and pursue them. After all, most of us spend an awful lot of time at work. You might as well love what you are doing and get paid for it. AvonBill (11358)
1175828 2011-02-07 02:33:00 Yup same here. Al tho, I'm not going to pay for something, I already know. Just to get a piece of paper.

And even if I did get some kind of degree, you probably need a car or something. Which is something, that I'm not planning on getting now, or in the future.

I think you might have come across the formula for success

1175829 2011-02-07 03:30:00 I.T. is an interest for me. Enjoy working on computers in my spare time but not interested in a career in I.T. QW. (15883)

1175831 2011-02-07 04:47:00 The ironic part is, his cabinets will be made of artificial hardboard or something.
The sad part is, you'd have to clean sand out of any crevices you have.
The funny part is, you'd probably get a fair few students applying. Some of them really are quite hard up.

As for the original topic -

I went into my degree after being interested in computers since I was little. Unfortunately, I did so after growing uncertain that I wanted to do it as a career, since I failed maths and didn't want to deal with a degree if it was mathsy. First semester was brilliant though. Had a bit of techy stuff with basic maths. Second semester, I failed awfully on maths and programming. Nasty.

But in any case, if I was going to pursue it as a career, I would sure as hell run from any software devving, because programming sem 2 (which I am repeating... brilliant) really put me off it, and maths kinda double ruined it.
Networking on the other hand, felt wonderful, so I think system admin or network admin or something along those lines would be fun. (Since I like dealing with people... generally)

I do want to get into other things though, like starting my own arcade business at some point in the nearish future.
