1207296 2011-06-06 09:49:00 Hi
Im building myself a new computer and was wondering what CPU to get. So I know Im getting a AMD CPU and was just wondering if there is much of a performance difference between the AMD Phenom II X2 555 3.2GHz Black Edition Dual-Core and the AMD Phenom II X4 840 3.2GHz Quad Core?
There's only $30 difference between the two. I will be using x64 version of Windows & so hopefully using the quad core will increase performance a bit.

So if anyone has any advice to which one is better or whether the quad-core will be better their advice would be much appreciated.
Thanks

1207298 2011-06-07 22:26:00 for $30 two extra cores is worth it in my opinion. In multithreaded applications or even if you like to have a lot of things running at once the quad core is much nicer.

The black edition is for overclockers really but even overclocked it is still 2 cores down.

Of course I think you're crazy and should either wait for bulldozer or build an i5 :P

1207302 2011-06-08 05:21:00 Cheers for your help. I would like to get an i5 bt dont have much cash ta spend so just settling for a AMD x4 at the moment. I just need something to be able to do some Photoshop on and convert music, dwnload stuff and a little bit of light gameing so not going all out on a comp yet. So I think il settle on the AMD Phenom II X4 840 for the moment.

Thanks
