| 1175644 | 2011-02-06 20:20:00 | But Telecom-bashing is fun :) Didn't Chris Barton used to work for PC World? The name sounds familiar. |

| 1175645 | 2011-02-06 20:22:00 | Chris Keall worked for them, dunno about Barton though. Don't see the point in emailing him. I've done it twice (In an incredibly nice tone / manner all things considered) but he never replied. Tempted to email NZHerald but dunno where to complain to, or if it'll simply fall on deaf ears :-/ Yeah, Telecom-bashing is fun, easy, and they're a big-ass target, but still... There's really gotta be a line somewhere :( |

| 1175646 | 2011-02-06 20:45:00 | All we need are the new wires, best done by lines companies, who know about such things... What new wires do we need - I thought UFB was about fibre optic cable? Lines companies are not the experts in this area (United Networks - now sucked into Vector - laid kilometres of fibre on the Shore in the 90's when they were doing the power line undergrounding project. To my knowledge, the fibre is just sitting there, unlit). New Zealand's most highly paid man, Telecom's Paul Reynolds From the tone of the rest of this 'article' - jealous much, Mr Barton? :groan: |

| 1175647 | 2011-02-06 21:31:00 | Yeah delivering electricity and delivering internet is not one and the same. Being good at one doesn't make you good at another. | Chilling_Silence (9) | ||
| 1175648 | 2011-02-06 21:36:00 | It's a pity the so-called journalist 'reporting' on this fact can't tell the difference.... I suspect he has invested heavily in Vector shares. |

No matter what the end product is, it's the consumer perception of it that really makes or breaks it. Which means how you choose and employ your resources that makes or breaks the CEO. To do that you need to know what the end user needs - and deliver the goods. I think where Reynolds falls down he doesn't understand his basic product or his consumers. There's a major difference between managing a company thats product is an indispensible item and one which is a matter of choice. Telecom too, is a company that is still a government entity playing at being a big corporate. If you don't understand your customer, you'll never succeed. No matter what the end product is. |

True, but Telecoms hands have been tied with the LLU unbundling thanks to the Labour Govt, which has stifled things quite a bit. What NZ thinks it wants: Fast broadband of 100m/bit to each home, with flexibility to use as much as they want What NZ's probably going to get: Fast data transfer of 10m/bit upwards, potentially unlimited national bandwidth, same old 20GB data caps that you can chew through in mere minutes Will Fibre vs ADSL2+ vs VDSL2 vs Wireless change this? Not likely... I'm not defending Telecom in that respect, but just saying that there's so many preconceived ideas that "the masses" have, based on such terrible dribble spewed forth by morons like Chris that NZ's going to be pretty damn pissed no matter what happens because of their misguided expectations. He says "What we need is the possibility of going to gigabit". What a moron! Considering right now, ISP's are allocated (I believe) 64kbps (Bits, not bytes) of international bandwidth (by Telecom wholesale) per-customer, having a ton more bandwidth over and above that is really just a waste for the better part. Granted ISP's wholesale data from places like Vocus ( http://www.vocus.com.au )to increase this as customer demand can be over and above that, but you catch my drift. NZ needs solid "megabit" options with higher caps, not faster faster faster. He's still a tool IMO. Edit: Just saw this, thought it was interesting: www.nbr.co.nz |
