1175318 2011-02-04 23:46:00 Six or seven months ago I felt forced to switch to 3 News and Campbell Live from One News and Close up because of One's propensity to try and spin out, and “sensationalise”, a potentially simple story of a couple of minutes into a 10 minute epic. They would attempt to create, and hone in on, supposedly controversial issues that weren't really there and jump to not one, but two, “intrepid reporters in the field” to ask incisive questions like “What new developments are there?” when we all know that the real answer is “Stuff all”. The ones that really get me are “How did you feel when...?”, and “What were you thinking when...”

So, what have we had on 3 News the last couple of nights? On Thursday John Campbell jumps on a plane when Cairns airport was about to be closed, gets to the nearest airport that's open, drives 1000 km north, only to be turned back a way because, surprise surprise, they're not letting people through! Last night Mike McRoberts had kind of done the same thing - both end up talking about how wet and windy it is and how much “devastation” will be/has been wreaked. Hello! That's what bloody big cyclones do!! We know this!! Why do the TV companies find it necessary to go to the expense of flying these people out there specially? (Use of a green screen is, thankfully, obviously not “honest” reporting!)

Then there's the ongoing issue of having a lead (maybe pronounce that like in the metal?) story in the main 6 o'clock news covered again “in depth”, either in the sports section, or the day's seven o'clock edition of the “Just in case they didn't get all the irrelevant minutae the first time around let's give it to the vacuous, all accepting, public again now in triplicate and throw in a few red herrings for good measure” slot. All in the name of, apparently, “Human Interest”

Don't even get me going on the Christchurch and Pike River sagas!

What I want is succinct, objective, factual reporting with no irrelevant frills – is that available in New Zealand (or anywhere else for that matter) these days?

1175319 2011-02-04 23:49:00 No - I turn them off.

Especially about someone that has some disease that affect 1 in 2 billion people.

(that sad, but not really worth of prime time tv)

or stupid questions like

Was it scary being in the cyclone?

300kmp winds !

1175320 2011-02-05 00:26:00 What about the "Exclusive to TVOne........." bullshit stories?

or the Jurnos who start every second sentence with the word "Now...." :( :(

1175321 2011-02-05 00:30:00 completley agree with you both .

it's just pure sensationalism nowadays, and mixed with that the banter between the hosts is just plain annoying.
just cant get over how they dumb it down so much
it was much the same in aussie.
when i was over there for a holiday, there were 5 or 6 news stations all repeating the same stuff, hour after hour, day after day, sensationalising it and pointing out the obvious.

and another thing; they had the one-day cricket on over there(oz v england). the game would start at 1.30, play through to 5(theyd cut the last 3-4 overs), have a half hour news bulletin, then at 5.30 start the second innings. then at 6pm they would cut to a 'flood special' for an hour and just repeat what they said 30mins prior.

its a sad situation i know but, if your having "rolling coverage" every waking hour of the day then surely you can go without a half hour "special".

Or dismiss a news item worthy of at least 10 minutes, with a couple of sentences. I would be tempted to pass a snide comment (or three) about hiring lawyers as front persons for the news, but I won't as much of what they say or don't say is prescribed for them by their editorial staff.

I agree with the rest of your rant too, tuiruru

1175325 2011-02-05 01:47:00 I stopped watching NZ's news a while ago. It has always been quite silly. From misinformation (or rather presenting some, but not all, of the facts) to having the like of Jackie Brown posing as a presenter/journalist/whatever the hell she was - from the 2 mins i have seen her new show, I think it's much more fitting.

I for one am sad that they got rid of Modern Family, it was moderately entertaining during dinner.

1175326 2011-02-05 02:42:00 The one that gets me is the stupid on site reporter reporting nothing more than some one could have done in the studio. mikebartnz (21)
1175327 2011-02-05 02:45:00 Human interest stories are a complete waist of time. Problem with NZ TV news they have 90 minutes to fill so they will use all the dross they can find. They need to go to a 30 minute format but that most likely wouldn't satisfy the bulk of the brain dead population who live for this stuff..... like my mother-in-law paulw (1826)
