| 1177557 | 2011-02-12 23:03:00 | has anyone on here had experience of running large LAN parties or been involved in them. Step son and his mates are looking into hosting one in Nelson and so they are looking for advice. If you can offer any useful advice they will be very grateful. :thanks | gary67 (56) | ||

None of these cheap $16 switches either, you need something with backplane capacity of 200Mbit (for full-duplex) x #of ports. Cheap ones might be OK for just gaming, but no doubt there will be a lot of file transfers happening, and that will kill your throughput if you have cheap hardware. |

| 1177563 | 2011-02-13 06:04:00 | Also think about age restrictions, how are they all going to be seated (Floorspace for so many PCs), providing multibox power adapters so they can string theirs off, spacing of switches so that punters dont have to have a 20m LAN cable. Do you go 10/100 or support gigabit? What happens if people start hammering your network with file-sharing and it impacts gaming? Is it going to be overnight or just for the day? Who's going to clean up the mess of chip packets and V-cans afterwards? I'm sure I can come up with more later too :) |
