1176635 2011-02-09 06:04:00 An Air NZ Dash Seven, on its way to Wellington, couldn't get it's nose wheel down, so it gets diverted to Blenheim where it buzzes around a bit and then comes in for a very controlled landing with it's nose wheel still up, that necessitated it "skidding down the runway on it's nose".

3 News reports this is a "crash landing". In fact they went on to end the report with the statement "This is the second tome an Air NZ Dash Seven has crash landed with it's nose wheel up in the last (sorry,I can't remember the number) months".

Talk about a large chunk of poetic license with the term "crash landing". Where was the smoke, the chunks of metal flying into the air, the panic, the screaming passengers (the ones interviewed after the "crash" seemed pretty composed) - the loss of life! That's a crash landing.

Another example of the media trying to sensationalis something with blatant disregard for the proper use of language!! :ban

1176637 2011-02-09 06:31:00 I would suspect that having the nose of the plane scraping along the runway would count as a "crash" landing. It certainly isn't a normal landing. somebody (208)
1176638 2011-02-09 06:32:00 Saw the landing on the news tonight. The pilot did a brilliant job of bringing it into land. Bobh (5192)

And haven't spent the time doing their homework. I totally agree with you tui.

I question why it was necessary for TVOne to show the wreckage of a Dash 7 out of Palmerston North a few years ago. The only similarity was it was the same type of aircraft, albeit one that made an abrupt and unscheduled stop nowhere near a runway. Today's incident at Blenheim was precise and controlled flying by the crew. A big difference.
