If NZ was the size of England or South America Im pretty sure it would be different.

There are thousands of registered sex offenders but that doesn't make it ok:p

How many (adults) registered soccer players are there in NZ? That is all that matters if we are discussing the Halbergs. If popularity is the criteria in NZ then rugby would win hands down.

The criteria for the Halbergs is 'excellence' in their field. Although the AW's were excellent in NZ terms, their results were not excellent internationally. Many applauded their efforts but going undefeated is a trivia question for the ages - not a trophy on the shelf.

Again, I don't think the AB's should have won either, I would have picked the Silver Ferns, The Black Ferns, The Kiwi's and the Rowing team (not in this order) ahead of the AB's for last year.

1176950 2011-02-12 19:42:00 And for rugby, they may not have won the world cup (a 4 yearly comp), the ABs are still number 1 in the world, the team to beat, the best for consistant excellence. .
No they are not. They are are a bunch of poofs now and they haven't won f*** all lately.

Well quite frankly considering all the contact in rugby I would say that it is more of a poofters game than soccer.

I don't know what tree you have been hiding under lately but there are more soccer players than rugby players now .
While the AB were the greatest a number of years ago, probably before they got paid so much, they have been bloody useless for years .

1176954 2011-02-12 20:35:00 I actually grew up just down the road from Dick Tayler, he was pretty much our local hero I'd have to say back in 1974 because he won a medal in the games held in our province. I played rugby for my first fifteen, and being a Cantabrian don't have anything against the Canterbury rugby team or supporters, in fact they are pretty much the best example of a professional team in New Zealand.

But for me rugby league is a much better sport and try never to miss a Warriors game because in my view it is simply a more exciting sport than rugby. The ball is in play more and something is always happening, just like football. Rugby seems very stop start and kicking is all to prevelant.

In Wellington it is probably the Phoenix and the Hurricanes as the top to teams in town, personally I think the atmosphere at the Phoenix games is makes it more exciting entertainment but I go to Hurricanes games from time to time.

As for Dick Talyer, don't really have respect for people who throw their toys out of the cot because they didn't get their way. To me winning a Commonwealth games medal, especially in recent years, doesn't rate as a high achievement on the world stage. Winning one in a sport no one really plays like netball is even more hollow. So there is more than just winning that should be taken into consderation in my view, and as it happens the Halberg criteria take that into account. Even so, I don't really follow the Halbergs and couldn't tell you who won it for the last five years because I really don't care.

I thought Steve Sumner summed it up well yesterday on the radio, we should be celebrating all the New Zealand sports that won competitions last year.

Well, that discounts the All Whites.
