Seems the country is about split 50 50.

58 - 42 split according to that Close Up poll and even then only after Hosking tried to drum up support for the other side.

As for rugby, surely this year is the test, if they can't win the world cup at home then really whatever they did last year means nothing. Unfortunately, we seem to think winning the year before the World Cup is important and I suspect even the other World Cup contenders laugh quietly to themselves about that because they've seen it many times since 1987.

1176938 2011-02-12 03:11:00 What planet are you one? They qualified for the biggest tournament in the w...blah blah....ore the tournament would have been considered almost impossible because of the lack of skill. They climbed a mountain in what is easily the worlds most popular sport for the first time in how long???

the rugby team for example has not won their world championship in a sport they completely dominate since 1987.

We had a public poll that the All Whit...

So if you think the achievements of the All Whites ïs "not much at all", you're in the minority and you don't know what you are takking about.

So they ONE good couple of months because they paid for decent players. Wow.

The Abs haven't won the world cup but have completely dominated since 1987?
Odd argument, who said you had to win to get an award?? Oh thats right you did.

I don't think the AW did much at all. They paid for better players and got results. As they should.

Why does the 'most popular game in the world' have to win a prize?
And a public poll doesnt do much for me. Ive never met anyone who has participated in one.

Its not I dislike soccer (or football for the hollywoods) or the AW, if they actually won or got further I may say different but its just not deserved in my eyes.

There are more sports that NZ competes in than soccer and rugby, basically looks like panel just pandered to the most boring game but wanted in on that huge money it generates.

Oh and I do know what Im talking about, after all it is my opinion.

Oh I know why it would generate a lot of money, because it is so boring. Yeah right.

No I don't hold the view you had to win, unless you have been shut off from the world you would hear that is what Dick Tayler is saying.

It might have escaped you but in the football World Cup people play for their country, you couldn't buy someone who had represented another country at senior level unlike rugby where you can.

And as far as I can tell Dick Tayler never won a race at either World Championship or Olympic level, so he is not even a winner himself at the elite level he talks about. Give your award back Dick, you only won a race with no serious world class competition in it.

So let's face it, for the average rugby boofhead there is no way the All Whites deserve anything no matter what they achieve.

At the end of the day I always thought the Halbergs were run by the rugby crowd and I'm somewhat amazed that even they had to acknowledge the performance of the All Whites this year. Even then, they had to compromise and Ryan Nelsen didn't get the award he deserved.

DT won at the commonwealth games for running.

Thats the point, it isn't rugby is it.

Why does the average soccer poofhead always go on about rugby?
At least the acting in rugby is left for the actors.

He couldn't compete at the world level in running, he clearly thinks if you avoid the real competition and win you deserve an award.

He is however also head of the Canterbury Rugby supporters club so it is his rugby bias that is showing here.

1176942 2011-02-12 05:59:00 I just read the Herald article, you're stretching it a bit thin relying on Adam Parore for your argument, interesting to see that Steve Gurney supported it though, now there is a real champion. Twelvevolts (5457)
1176943 2011-02-12 06:13:00 The herald article isn't about my opinion, just another.

And for rugby, they may not have won the world cup (a 4 yearly comp), the ABs are still number 1 in the world, the team to beat, the best for consistant excellence.
I highly doubt the AW are or will ever be seen in the same light. Would be cool if the do, but not going to happen anytime soon.

But yea, Ill leave it at we will agree to disagree.

1176944 2011-02-12 06:52:00 The AW will NEVER win a World Cup, nor anything remotely like it, in my lifetime :) Zippity (58)
