| 1176927 | 2011-02-11 06:06:00 | It's been hilarious watching the sour grapes from the rugby fraternity, lost a lot of respect Dick Taylor. Wynton just stuck it to Halberg's which admittedly deserve the serve they get - brilliant. | Twelvevolts (5457) | ||
| 1176928 | 2011-02-11 06:26:00 | The criteria to 'win' the halberg awards should be to 'win' something substantial. I don't actually believe the All Blacks should have won it either this year. | sam m (517) | ||

Actually they did rather well and the rest of the world as far as soccer goes thought so too. I think it pathetic that so many of you think that winning is the only thing that counts. You are starting to sound like a bunch of Aussies. |

| 1176935 | 2011-02-11 21:59:00 | I don't think its the rugby lot, its just what exactly did the AW do? not much at all. What planet are you one? They qualified for the biggest tournament in the world in the most popular sport in the world, the win night at Westpac in front of 35000 people was pretty comfortably the biggest sporting event in New Zealand last year. The All Whites then went to South Africa and drew against the then world champions and against two other very strong teams and came away undefeated. That chances a New Zealand team would achieve that result before the tournament would have been considered almost impossiible. They climbed a mountain in what is easily the worlds most popular sport. None of the other contenders came close, the rugby team for example has not won their world championship in a sport they completely dominate since 1987. Netball is effectively played competitively by two countries and we beat Australia in a competition Commonwealth Games - which at best is a sporting backwater. The League was a great night, but what was achieved really was a win over Australia, made more meritorious only because they thrashed us a few weeks earlier. We had a public poll that the All Whites won as well, we had two TV polls last night where the majority voted for the football team as well. The "have to win something" argument is simply BS, that would mean only minority sports that no other country took seriously would ever win the awards. Oh just like it has been for years, and it is nothing short of a disgrace that Wynton Rufer didn't win a few years back, surely one of the few elite sportsman we have ever produced. So if you think the achievements of the All Whites ïs "not much at all", you're in the minority and you don't know what you are takking about. |
