1176132 2011-02-20 00:52:00 I receive this E-mail from Telstar yesterday (19 Feb):

RETIREMENT OF YOUR PARADISE DIAL UP INTERNET
"From 11 April 2011 we will be shutting down the Paradise Dial Up internet service you use.
Since Paradise Dial Up was first launched, there have been many advances in internet technology and we are no longer able to continue to support this service.
To continue to receive internet services from TelstraClear you will need to transfer your phone line and calling to TelstraClear and set up a new Clearnet account before 11 April 2011 .
We have two great offers below which we hope will be helpful moving forward:
° $3.95 Dial Up internet: Pay only $3.95 per month, on a 12 month term for unlimited Clearnet Dial Up internet, up to five FREE email addresses and FREE virus and spam protection.
° Broadband: We have a variety of broadband plans available to you. To make the move to broadband even easier, if you sign up for 24 months to HomePlan Call Local on a 10GB or 25GB broadband plan, we'll give you one month FREE, a FREE wireless modem* and FREE national calling for 2 years! **
Plus, when you shift to Clearnet, we will automatically forward any emails sent to your @paradise.net.nz email address to your new @clear.net.nz address – so you won’t miss out on any important emails.
If you choose not to transfer to Clearnet, your Paradise Dial up service will be discontinued from 11 April 2011 and you will no longer be able to access your Paradise account or use your Paradise email address.
If you currently pay your Paradise account by automatic payment, you will need to stop your automatic payments yourself. TelstraClear is unable to stop these payments for you.
To ensure continuous internet service or discuss alternative options for you, please contact us via email at paradisecontact@telstraclear.co.nz .

I have my broadband with another company but I have been a Paradise customer for 12 years and always kept my dial up account so I could keep my E-mail address and also have the dial up in an emergency or when away from home. For $10 a month it was a handy backup.

Telstrar Clear contradict themselves in this e-mail. First regarding dial-up, they say they are "no longer able to continue to support this service." But further down they say you can keep your dial-up and existing e-mail address if you switch your phone line and calling service to them.

So they are just being great 'effing greedy liars. By their own words they can still offer dial up with a paradise e-mail account, but they figure they can make more money by forcing you to give them your phone rental and toll services in return. Well, I won't be blackmailed like this, I will never give them my personal business, and on Monday will be switching our business account away from them.

1176133 2011-02-20 07:52:00 They are in fact saying they can't keep Paradise dialup. Not just any dialup.

Anyway most companies give you dialup anyway, in case of broadband outages.

You want a non-changing email address, get a domain name. Much easier.

1176134 2011-02-20 08:18:00 Yup I'm with pctek. Domains are the way to go. I get Google to host mine. Costs around $20 a year for the domain, that's all. Much much much cheaper than paying for a dial-up or email-only service with an ISP! Chilling_Silence (9)
1176135 2011-02-20 08:40:00 Yes, I agree guys, I have my own business domain but I like to keep separate my business domain name suffix and my personal E-mail suffix.

My broadband provider of course, offers E-mail and I have one there already but never used it because I've had the Paradise E-mail address for 12 years and it was just easier to keep that. So I will be migrating to my broadband account for personal e-mail but after more than a decade of using the paradise one there is some effort in the transfer.

My main complaint is the outright lying by TelstrarClear about this issue. Ok I am a small time customer, only paying them $10 per month x 12 = $120 per annum, (also all by auto payment and no paper invoicing), but as a businessman myself I would never alienate customers just because they were not big spenders by telling them I will not provide them with any further service unless you give me more business. That's why I am saying, and will encourage others by telling my story, to stick it where the sun don't shine.

There's just so little recognition today of customer loyalty.
