1179146 2011-02-17 02:03:00 Around 7pm last night, putting on a brave face but sad to be leaving. It was a hectic day sorting what had to go and what could stay behind but we managed it. I expected Mrs T to be beside herself but she put on the stiff upper lip and came through only slightly moist.

Ran up the laptop on Skype yesterday and established a trial upstairs/downstairs connection and the look on her face was priceless when she realised what it could do for absentee communications. Espoecially with the boyfriend!

Its going to be quiet around here, but Mrs T and I sure have a better appreciation of how our parents must have felt when we went off overseas, and communication was largely by letter. I phoned home just once in 12 months, it cost a fortune in those days.

Cheers

1179148 2011-02-17 03:01:00 I've been there, Billy. Modern communications are amazing when you consider how they were not too long ago.
A British company flew our son, straight out of university, across to UK, along with many other brand new NZ engineers (seventeen of them celebrated 'capping day' in a London pub!!) Engineering jobs were almost non-existent here following the 'crash', especially for those newly out of uni, let alone having time to become registered. Does that sound familiar in 2011? The experience was invaluable. Friendships were made and still exist today.
Even then toll calls cost an arm and a leg, so were for special occasions. Letters were treasured.
You will all survive and she's not really so very far away. Skype will be your best friend.

ps. We went to Britain 12 months later.

No need for that...I only vaguely remember the thread about the laptop so I suppose I would've been as clueless as Rob.

All the best for your daughter Billy
