2011-02-15 18:57:00 | www.trademe.co.nz She's asking about bankruptcy. Geez, makes you appreciate your own situation. K well here's the situation in a nutshell. In debt trying to get thru tough time of redundancy so lived on credit cards trying to get thru on our own (pride). Racked up some debts just on living costs no holidays, purchases etc. Just food, petrol, getting cars serviced, etc for 1 year. Things got bad with no jobs and very little paid work. Then a steady job came along tho on very low wage. So we decided to consolidate. Took a 5 year loan very low interest unsecured as we have nothing but 2 low valued cars. Don't own a house. We were doing great. Both of us in steady albeit low paid jobs. We were managing. Just. DH has been struck down by an extremely rare health condition called Dermatomyositis further complicated by Interstitial Lung Disease (from which one does not recover). His health deteriorated so fast he ended up hospital for 1 month before they knew what was wrong. He's undergoing chemo now and is obviously not working so not earning. He spends over 16 hours a day on oxygen. We have 3 young children 14, 7 and 6. That's our story in a nutshell. After rent, phone, power, food and petrol for one visit to Chch hospital per week we have $70 left over for which we have to clothe 3 children, buys meds, pay for doc visits, insure, WOF and rego our 2 cars (one of hich blew a head gasket and according to the mechanic "is F!@#ed" and "not worth repairing") So you can see, we're well and truely up shite creek without a paddle, life jackets, can't swim and are drowning! We have one debt to one loan company which we are not able to make payments on. They said today they cannot give us a holiday either. They can get our payments down to $70 per week but you do the math. Pretty much stuffed so you can see why we are thinking. PS We have no friends anyway. All our family live overseas and we moved here 6 years ago to give our kids a better and more secure life and future. As you might see from our listings DH is listing all his much loved fishing stuff and bits and pieces. It's all we have to sell off. Please don't tell us to budget better. We don't have SKY, never eat out, don't get take outs, pulled our 2 extremely talented daughters out of gymnastics, don't go to movies, don't hire dvds, never been on a holiday in 6 years. Not sure where else to cut back as life consists of no luxuries at this point in time. Oh I have to mention, we do have 1 luxury which we cannot do without. We have internet. It's the only link I have to my family whom we have not seen for 6 years and probably never will see again :( So I have to have internet. That's my weekly splurge of $10 per week. The only one thing of any value we have is a car worth about $5000 which isn't WOF'd rego'd or insured cause WE HAVE NO MONEY! We live out of Chch and there are no buses to town so we need 1 car to get him back and forth to hospital. Our other one blew it's lid so we can sell that for nothing. There really isn't anything they can take - what else have we got to lose (our clothes, beds, lounge suite, old t.v.). Will look at Citizens advice too. I just wanted to hear from anyone who's been thru it and can advise of the pros and cons. WINZ are paying sickness benefit which doesn't even cover the rent :( DH's health is not likely to get better - docs are trying to stop or slow down the deterioration of the lungs and stop this aweful disease from getting worse but there IS NO CURE and he will not get better. He went from working a full day to being so ill and spending a month in hospital before they knew what was wrong. His condition is extremely rare and the long term prog is not so good. Because of the speed at which he deteriorated the docs had no choice but to go ahead and treat. We just cannot cope with the financial situation and have no where to cut back on. 1 loan to one loan company. Less than $20K.

2011-02-15 19:12:00 | They should be getting a housing benefit as well as the sickness from WINZ, but seriously if your that far in the poo why did they have 2 cars. We have one because I can't work and I walk everywhere | gary67 (56) | |
2011-02-15 19:16:00 | Wow, not a bad reality check :horrified Its a pitty that financial aid from the government can't help these people - but instead is used by bastards abusing the system and buying alcohol every second day. :groan:

2011-02-15 19:33:00 | Im sure WINZ has emergency handouts & benefits, I take it they dont have Health Insurance, which for an immigrants is rare! WINZ does do accommodation supplements, still, sounds like they are up the creek! Poor people, and worse, they dont have any one here to help them....Ive been in a tight situation before in London, its awful. Just checked the thread, looks like they are getting some better advise regarding WINZ help the the correct benefits for them!

2011-02-15 19:41:00 | if your that far in the poo why did they have 2 cars . Because they were both working and lived where there were no buses? Anyway, they don't have 2 cars now . We have 2 . Husbands 1986 ute . My 1992 Toyota . The ute is a pain, not worth running diesel now, but we can't afford another ute and it is useful . Makes me laugh the MPs needing to change the BMW fleet because they are 3 yrs old . I've never had a 10 yr old car never mind 3 years . . . . . . . .

2011-02-15 20:02:00 | Makes me laugh the MPs needing to change the BMW fleet because they are 3 yrs old. I've never had a 10 yr old car never mind 3 years........ That's in our interests. Up to about 40 months, BMW resale values tend to exceed their book value. After that, the resale value plummets as a function of high maintenance and minimal prestige value in a second hand BMW. Which would you rather have? As owner (read taxpayer) I'd rather have them turned over every 3 years for optimum returns, and all in all the BMWs are a better use of money than the OZ alternatives.

And the EU car thing, maybe NZ and AU historically has been a Holdern/Ford thing even for govt officials but in many countries the have EU cars right (when catering for intl visitors and etc . . ) . |

2011-02-15 20:27:00 | I guess the 3yr old thing is industry practice? I think the 3yr old thing stems in part from tax law that fixes the life of the asset at 3 years for depreciation purposes which is why most vehicle leases are fixed at 3 yrs . I don't know the mechanics of it because it would be commercially sensitive, but the government would have paid far far less than would be the case for company or private purchases . Possibly even to the extent the initial purchase price may be fairly close to that of the resale 3 yrs later . Hence almost depreciation-free motoring . Makes sense .
