1177897 2011-02-13 22:47:00 My dad's 80gb ide harddrive finally died on saturday.

His computer was going incresingly slow, even with 2.4ghz cpu, 1.2gb ram, ATI RADEON 9600 256mb .

To the point that it wouldn't boot into windows, and if it did, it would be unuasble.

I kept telling him that it was his hard drive, but did he listen? NO!

He kept putting the xp disk in and doing a repair.

I thought that his sata drive might of been causing the issues, but it was his main drive.

At the moment, he's running a brand new 80gb drive (it was given to me ages ago), which i installed windows 7 home premium onto.

He wanted to try to recover the data off the dead drive. I put it as a secondary drive, it stopped the system from booting. I put it in an external enclosure, and it showed the drive in my computer, but with no Empty/Full Line (basically had no capacity). So it's dead.

I told him he should of backed up, although the stuff he wanted to recover he can re send to his email.

Also, in a few weeks, my uncle is giving him a mac, yes a mac, as my dad on browses the net, email etc..

Once he gets the mac, i get his PC!!!! woohoo it has a Gigabyte Mobo, 2.4ghz CPU (probably AMD, am unsure, haven't used it in ages) 1.2gb ram (will have 1.5gb ram once i get it) 256mb ATI Radeon 9600.

Once i get it i'll shove the sorround sound card back in it, and put my hard drives and dvd drives in it.

Also, his computer has a temperature thing on the front, and his pc kept on getting hot.

No wonder, he only has 1 fan at the back (and cpu fan). When i get it, i'm shoving 2 fans at the front (it has bits for 2) and another 1 at the back.

1177902 2011-02-14 01:10:00 And goodiesguy you might finally end up with a legal copy of the operating system as a bonus as you were using Dad's XP Pro.

That has to be a plus in my opinion.

1177903 2011-02-14 02:55:00 My dad's 80gb ide harddrive finally died on saturday.

His computer was going incresingly slow, even with 2.4ghz cpu, 1.2gb ram, ATI RADEON 9600 256mb .

Exact same thing happened to a friend of mine.

His PC was terribly slow, HDD light was always on, he installed new RAM but it didn't help, then he was getting BSOD all the time.

Eventually I came over, checked his HDD and found over 1000 reallocated sectors - I think I got to it just in time!

Recovered as much as I could with gnu_ddrescue (lost only about 4MB) and he bought a new drive. Working great so far.
