1179020 2011-02-17 00:16:00 Deterrents / Solutions:

1. Car Alarm + Immobilizer

2. Steering Wheel Lock and/or Gear Shift Lock and/or Tyre-Wheel Lock (the best)

3. GPS Locator

4. Metla :D

5. Read Here (www.google.co.nz), then implement

6. Install security cameras, even if dummy ones, and include signs in your car windows saying that they are being monitored, etc.

About the only thing that I've not had on mine was 3 / 4, and they *still* tried to nick off with my MX5 outside of work in a patrolled carpark with Cameras. It's long-sold now, but still.. It's piss easy to rip the hell outta most alarms, this was a triple immobilizer and they got past all but the final one. Pulled out the speaker under the bonnet too, so it went silent.
Instead they decided to punch in the sides of the car, pull out anything of slight value, and take off ...

If somebody wants your car, very little will stop them, and if you can stop them then often they'll take their frustration out on your car. It's a lose-lose situation.

An alarm will deter the casual thief. Everything else is just a hassle and doesn't do much.

Still, qazwsxokmijn, glad to hear you got it back :)

Thanks, we're grateful that the car is back, minus the repair costs to the damages done. My main concern now is the almost certainty of the locality of the scumbag. It is entirely possible that just a couple of hours ago when I walked to the nearby police station (which is closed  ) and the bakery, that I saw the scumbag and was oblivious of the fact.

Had I known who he is and where he lives....

I have a rusty old 1987 Ford econovan that nobody in his right mind would be interested in stealing. I intend replacing it in the near future.

I have read Consumer's Car Reliability Survey Report and both Fords and Holdens scored below average. I am not looking for another Ford or Holden for that matter.

1179024 2011-02-17 00:47:00 When I helped PCTek move home, I saw a police car roughly every 3 mins.

Uhuh.
My son has lived in Ranui for about 3 years now. He never locks the place. They never lock the car either.
He'd never been burgled either.

We lived in other parts of West Auckland before the move away - ditto, never got burgled.

At the last place I never locked my car and despite hoping, no-one ever pinched it either.

So while it happens, it's not as common as you imply.

Although I guess it depends what your house/car looks like. Perhaps we were lucky enough to be too poor looking to have anything of worth.

1179025 2011-02-17 00:50:00 My father has a civil engineering degree .

In NZ, my father's qualification is, of course, not recognised, and since we were scraping off the meager remains of the savings we had to migrate to NZ, he had to make do with cleaning job with Green Acres .

Now he's getting older and over the years have had jobs that are less physically demanding . He's currently working as a machine operator for a pharmaceutical company .

.

No wonder he wouldn't let you do that upgrade way back when .

Yep some people work hard but stay on the treadmill . Bummer .

1179026 2011-02-17 00:58:00 meh, why do you think the police have Holdens and not Fords?.....reliability!

Cheaper.

(just fueling the argument, couldn't care less about the Holden vs Ford, imo they're both crap)

If the Calais is broken into and the steering unlocked and the key hot wired, the engine will still cut out after 2 mins if the key isnt present. Its actually the same with Falcons too!
