Would love to get a decent car, Sol. But money is everything these days and it just so happens that money is something we don't have much of! |

Yeah, it's just that nothing has really come for my parents. They always do very hard work for little rewards.... My father has a civil engineering degree from a leading university in Indonesia, but was never able to get a rewarding engineering job because he had my big brother before he could find a great job and had to settle with a mediocre pipe-salesman job. In southeast Asia you can hardly take even a week off because there's no such thing as benefit from the government, it's a corrupt dog eat dog world out there. He could have secured a better salary doing his job then, but that entails massive corruption that will see your salary quadrupling if you do it right. Such practice was, and still is, rampant in his field but he always refused to do it and always worked honestly, so we always get by every month with little to spare. He has a good friend who took over his role when we left for NZ, and being the little devil that he is dad reported that this friend of his earns around four times that my father would usually earn. In NZ, my father's qualification is, of course, not recognised, and since we were scraping off the meager remains of the savings we had to migrate to NZ, he had to make do with cleaning job with Green Acres. It was back breaking work, cleaning up to six houses a day to feed his family with three kids. He would often, even till now, come home with sore this and that from muscle overuse. Now he's getting older and over the years have had jobs that are less physically demanding. He's currently working as a machine operator for a pharmaceutical company. Pay is just under 40k, with a 60k mortgage and about 20k debt to relatives in Indonesia for helping us with our mortgage, he and mum still has to do the odd cleaning jobs to get by. Mum always says she feels useless because she couldn't do much while dad goes out there to put bread (well, more like rice in our family lol) on the table. So yeah, it's not always birds and butterflies for my parents, no matter how hard they work the pay is always just enough to get by. With a degree that is useless in NZ, poor background and an aging body my dad can't do much anymore. That is why my concern these days is that mum and him will be stuck in this deteriorating neighbourhood until god knows when...... Decent car lol its a Holden, you need to save up for a Ford, I hope this thread won't derail into an automotive thread...... Though for what it's worth, I love Ford and Holden all the same, and if I won lotto, you'll find a dark blue FPV GT-P and a black HSV GTS parked alongside each other in my front yard. Behind closed gates, of course, and maybe laser beams and guards armed with AK-47s. |

| 1179018 | 2011-02-16 23:57:00 | Yeah, it's just that nothing has really come for my parents. They always do very hard work for little rewards.... I can attest with that. I know many people who came to NZ for high school then attended a NZ University, even got Permanent Residence, couldn't get jobs so returned home. A few of them, their parents even bought homes here. They do like NZ and return back every now and again ... The only people from abroad who remained in NZ are those who got specialised degrees like dental or if they are a top graduate and got head hunted. I know have a friend in Christchurch, he did a BCom, then a Masters at Lincoln and half way thru a PhD, working as a teacher at one of the international colleges for dismal pay and long hours (he has to take work home as well). He's paid $35k since 2004 with no payrise. Another friend of mine did a temporary job as a cleaner for a hotel/motel and after a while of not landing a job, went back home. My folks has always had long hours but that they now close to retirement, only work half days and moved to a quieter place. Together they prob get less than 1x min wage salary (at present). |
