I agree with you:) there are lots of sources for infecting PC´s

so what do you use for protection except of common sense

Speedy Gonzales

I use different firewall and AV, but some av´s and other protection software sometimes destroy each other during scanning, so if anyone uses two different av´s at the same time, first it would be better to make little research if they might be compatible

Well you shouldn't really run 2 AV programs or firewalls . Otherwise they'll conflict with each other (firewalls more than AV programs). Some people get carried away and install everything thats on the internet!

And wonder why they still get infected ;). I wouldnt rely on ccleaner. Since its not a virus scanner. It just removes temp files, and lets you remove entries from startup

1209347 2011-06-15 05:23:00 I don't run an antivirus.

I do however run Malware Bytes + CCleaner once a month as a routine checkup it rarely finds anything though.

I did that once on an old Dell machine a few years ago. Would not reccomend it.

Edit: this is saying i posted a 4:23pm, yet its 3:23pm

1209350 2011-06-17 00:38:00 On reflection, Mrs T uses one of my USB memory sticks to get photos printed, so how do you write-protect it if it doesn't have a switch, I have a 512MB, 2 x 1GB and one 8GB and none of these have one!

I've done some research for software ways and means and it seems that some only switch an attribute in the registry of the host computer.

What is out there that is easy to apply and remove? It would be a right pain having to fart about changing it after every (photo) usage.

Cheers

You can get USB sticks that are password protected via software on a read only partition on the stick.
Can be a bit of a pain to use.

1209352 2011-06-17 04:21:00 I learned from experience that no matter how much "common sense" you think you have, you can't avoid viruses.
And if you have common sense, but do dodgy stuff on the web anyway, where does that leave you?

I use MSSE and Windows firewall, I generally leave UAC enabled unless it causes me headaches.

As for network protection, I setup a pfsense router for home and office, and at home I use a peerblock plugin in pfsense to block known bad addresses, seems to work OK.

1209353 2011-06-17 06:02:00 So I use BitDefender antivirus with all its features, malwarebytes antimalware, spybot search & destroy and comodo firewall. I don´t use them all at once ofcourse.

Why not? What one might miss another often finds.
You should use them all at once. All of mine do an extensive scan on Sunday, I may randomly run them other days of the week if I feel like it.

And I have loads of them......

I don't really care about protection. Never had an 'accidental' virus at all.

Though I do run Avast just to be safe.

1209355 2011-06-17 09:16:00 In the end it's a percentage thing. You may not get an infection if you browse safe sites occasionally, and don't use protection. BUT you would be toying with high chances of a really bad outcome.
On the other hand using an AV, Firewall and recommended malware scanners (all updated regularly and used regularly) will give you much better odds of not getting infected so badly, if at all.

Sorry for getting philosophical:)
