1178761 2011-02-16 04:37:00 Though it's unlikely they will ring as I don't go sending my phone number out to every Tom, Dick and Harry.

They've rung our home number twice which we don't give out to everyone either, but not once have they called our business line (with only one digit difference) which is on business cards and the Internet. :stare:

1178762 2011-02-16 04:56:00 I only answer if the caller display number comes up on my phone. If it comes up with 0000 or private, I let it go to voicemail. So I have never had one. I suspect they don't leave messages.

It is really phone spam. The people on the other end of the phone are probably paid 10cents an hour, and if they get one sucker out of 100, it is paying off for them.

1178763 2011-02-16 06:43:00 Glad to hear you finally lost your virginity WT ... you've been waiting so long I'm astounded you managed to last 45 minutes .... SP8's (9836)
1178764 2011-02-16 06:45:00 I suppose they have to expect some level of ignorance, I mean their whole scam only works if the person they call up doesn't know much about computers. Agent_24 (57)
1178765 2011-02-16 07:02:00 Glad to hear you finally lost your virginity WT ... you've been waiting so long I'm astounded you managed to last 45 minutes .... : Hope your'e talking about my phone call

The time flew by, esp with a "reboot" --- You know, slow underpowered Computer, and "infected" of course, takes a good 5-10 minutes to reboot,up and running.

Helped that I couldn't tell him if I have vista or windows 7. :p
I was telling him I couldn't get on the internet sometimes, or the browser would lock up or take me to web sites I didn't really want to go to.

kind of going off track to what he was wanting me to do - tisk tisk ,then we had to start again as I had forgotten what the instructions were -- real novice remember.

Mind you we did have a nice "chat" while waiting for a reboot ( cough cough) and lockup to unlock, along the lines of -- I guess you must be seeing a lot of people with infections - its nice to know Microsoft are finally doing something to help their customers.

(Thinking -Wait on till I puke)

His voice was starting to get a bit impatient ------so much for customer care :D

Well Done :)

1178767 2011-02-16 22:52:00 Has anyone actually got as far as finding out what the actual scam is? Are they trying to sell something, get your credit card details, infect the PC, or what?

I've had a several of these calls, unfortunately at inconvenient times, so I've just told them to go away (more or less...) and hung up.

1178768 2011-02-16 23:11:00 The basics - Once they convince you that you actually have infections on your PC they then tell you to go to logmein ( a legit/legal program), which after giving a code will allow them to have access to your computer, remotely - ( from one customer who did get scammed) - they then went in and did something which all of a sudden caused Nod32 to go nuts -- they then convinced him to give his credit card details and was charged $300 and they would then remove the "infections" This was also after he was convinced that Nod32 was not working -- how? because he had managed to show him the "infections" in the event viewer logs ( yeah right) and then proceeded to show him the clean nod Logs stating it wasn't working.

The customer called me complaining that Nod32 was not working, when I told him what had happened he was shocked -- i told him to call his bank RIGHT NOW, and cancel that transaction - lucky for him he managed to call the bank quick enough and they stopped it.

As stupid as it sounds many fall for it - have a look at This page (www.digitaltoast.co.uk) -- theres a couple of Videos of the scam - and obvious people knowing what it is.

Watch them, and you will see you play dumb and have a bit of fun.

yesterday when I was doing recieving this nice help, it was dead easy to clock up approx 45 minutes, acting dumb & dumber :) The trick is to not let them know that you know its a scam, dont be to clever.
About three times he asked me if I knew much about computers or the files we were looking at -------- nooooooooo of course not. :D

1178769 2011-02-17 01:47:00 Congratulations WT! You have finally lost your virginity . :D

Maybe now they'll pester you and leave me alone . Mind you, I haven't had a call since the last one (natch!) and I'm dying to try out the 'Mr X is no longer of this world" strategy .

Must watch the dead parrot sketch again to get some colourful expressions to use .

Cheers
