There is an opt out, but surely NZ privacy laws wouldnt allow this to start with ??

they scan you emails for webmail advertising purposes.

IIRC Gmail does it as well but you can turn it off

We pay for xtra email. Its not free so this is unacceptable.

Go to GMail settings → Web Clips and untick the Show my web clips above the Inbox checkbox.
