1209055 2011-06-14 00:49:00 Hi Team

I'm trying to get MSE onto my son's laptop but can't proceed until SP3 is onboard. He has a persistent virus infection but can't do an on line scan because he munted his net access by being too impatient and deleted a lot of files by clicking around at random.

He gets his downloads from my computer via usb stick so for my own protection I need him to get MSE installed, but it appears he needs to install XP SP3 first.

Does anybody know what year/month it was included?

Cheers

1209056 2011-06-14 01:01:00 NOT a good idea to try and install SP3 if you have a persistent virus /Infection.

Installing the Service packs, changes system files etc, if there is an infection, then that may very well may stop the SP installing correctly. Then the whole system may become un-bootable.

You would be better off slaving the drive and scanning it, then once clean then install SP3.

Another option is to use a bootable CD to scan the Drive - something like kaspersky (www.techmixer.com) OR if you have nod32 that can make a rescue CD as well ( had to use it this morning on a customers PC).

Cant remember what issue SP3 was in, but you can download the full version From Microsoft (www.microsoft.com)

1209057 2011-06-14 01:09:00 It is just one minor infection, I can't recall the name off hand, but it is just a nuisance issue not a major .

I don't want to download SP3 if I can avoid it as we are barely within our data limit at present and I have too much work to do to be dragging the chain at dial-up speeds .

If anybody knows the month I'd be very grateful for that info .

Cheers

1209058 2011-06-14 01:52:00 Try may, June or July 2008 wainuitech (129)
1209059 2011-06-14 01:56:00 And if you still cant find it, I can copy it to cd (only the setup file - its not the ISO). So, wont have an autorun file on it.

Only thing is, you'll have to come here to pick it up

you need to fix his PC BEFORE installing SP3.
You will need to run several Malware/spyware scanners & a rootkit scanner across it. Dont rely on MSSE fixing the virus infection by itself.
You will need working internet access for the AV,spyware scanner to update.
Kaspersky Bootable CD is excellent, it bypasses Win alltogether so internet access will work on this CD.Remeber to run the update when the CD has loaded up. This will be your 1st step if you arnt comfortable with removing his HD to AV scan it via you PC.

Seriously consider a full reload, del the whole lot. A lesson learned for him.

1209062 2011-06-15 05:48:00 I thought I'd wrapped up this thread but I must have been dreaming!

The infection was the worm Win32/silly.fdc and Avast cleaned it without problems. We didn't need to go the whole hog as was suggested by 1101, that is overkill for a computer that never gets near any dodgy sites. In fact it is quite possible that the infection was picked up from a photo booth, it was definitely carried in here by USB stick.

His computer checked out OK with Avast, then I restored his net access, used Windows Update to get SP3. Once all that was done, I took it off-line and uninstalled Avast and ZoneAlarm, installed MSE, put it back online and updated it and ran that. All came up clean, plus Windows firewall is now active.

All memory sticks in the house have been checked and I found two with autorun.inf hidden in the root, which apparently is a possible indication of a silly.fdc infection. I have my computer set to show everything, hidden files and all so spotting them was no problem and they have been deleted, for whatever that's worth now that everything else is clean.

MalwareBytes is next on the list, plus Spybot and after that I think he will be OK, he has certainly learned a lesson and won't be quite as cavalier in the future.

Thanks for the help

Cheers

1209063 2011-06-15 06:26:00 Good that you got SP3 in, BUT if you want to run all the updates, depending on what software is on the computer (office etc) expect at least a few more Hundred MB of security updates.

Putting in SP3 is only a small part of getting the updates installed. As there are many more after SP3.

They were probably all done. It was not an SP3 specific activity, it was Windows update in action, including SP3, and believe me there was an endless stream of downloads and it took quite a while! The total was something like half a gig.

He doesn't stray to the dark side, in fact he knows very little about computers and has even less interest, no games, no warez, no torrents etc. He also has a healthy dose of paranoia about bad stuff messing up his music files etc. They are all official downloads for his Honours studies, bought and paid for where necessary.

He pretty much sticks to Word, Publisher, Sibelius and his other music programs.

If we are missing something, please spell it out so that I can go back and check.

Cheers
