1178254 2011-02-14 18:37:00 New Zealand's 2,590,000 inhabitants . . . . . . . . . . . they have practically no unemployment, easily buy houses on government loans

One big problem is a dog-chasing-tail economy: with little industry of its own, the country depends heavily on exports of its butter, beef, mutton and wool to balance the steady flow of imports that its people need .

So the economy still sucks .

But back then there was employment .

............and it was all downhill from then on...........:punk:banana

Around that time, the machine shop area at English Electric Whetsone was full of castings with the cryptic word "Mere" chalked on them.
It took some time to find out these were scheduled for another 30MW turbine at Meremere.

Turbines of 60MW and less were classed as small and made at Small Steam Turbines at Whetstone as opposed to Large Steam Turbines at the Rugby works.

According to this ad. in New Scientist, July 1961, "New Zealand enjoys one of the highest standards of living in the world."

What went wrong?

1178259 2011-02-15 00:22:00 Terrible time really husband would race from work to pub, throw as much piss down his neck as humanely possible till closing at 1800 hrs. Grab his 2 flagons and go home. If his missus complained she got a hiding.
Cars had Lucas ignition, starting and charging systems and kept breaking down.
Horrible horrible time.

1178261 2011-02-15 01:11:00 It is amazing how prices have changed over the years. You only have to go into the library and look at old newspapers. I remember going to the pictures for a shilling. This included the bus, an icecream and a ticket to the movie. This was a little before 1965 though. In 1966 I complained about having to pay 8 shillings for a three course lunch at Springs Junction while travelling on a Newmans coach.

I had no problem finding a job in 1965. Employers were always looking for workers.
