1180211 2011-02-21 08:43:00 So...I'm looking at a Samsung 46inch LCD www.noelleeming.co.nz which has internet connectivity. For an extra $200 for the dongle.

But its "proprietary" according to a review - whatever that means.

And then I read that the PS3 internet connection is similar. I've restricted my son from watching youtube on his PS3 because I could see the BB disappearing. But maybe I'm wrong?

Anybody understand all this? Looks like Sony will shortly release LCDs with a Google browser and connectivity. Connect to what - the whole net, or just dedicated sites?

1180212 2011-02-21 09:11:00 That model is $2000 at Harvey Normans. They might even take $500 off for cash.
:)

1180213 2011-02-21 09:19:00 Ah - good one Trev. Actually Leemings Invercargill have it for $1450.

I started off kicking tyres with my usual Panasonic loyalty, and convinced plasma was the best choice at 42inches+.

Found a salesman who was adult and a bit obsessive about TV technology. All good because I understood most of what he said. Ultimately he took me to the front of the shop where I could see 20 tvs all showing the same video, and suggested I pick the best picture.

Hmm...LCD won.

1180214 2011-02-21 09:23:00 Plus I don't mind giving a plug for the Invercargill branch of Noel Leeming. The manager volunteers to support Habitat For Humanity, the NL Group sponsored the charity, and the sales manager (whom I know personally) has been a totally decent man to me for years.

Excellent service from this shop. :clap

So I support good service and they match or come close to Hardly Normal most of the time. Not that I need much in the way of appliances now. :D

1180215 2011-02-21 09:44:00 Just watch out for faulty power boards a year in.
My LAC32 series 5 died a while ago (in warranty) thanks to faulty caps.

?? I have the Samsung LA40B650 with an internet connection - it doesn't need a dongle .
Are you sure you aren't thinking of a wi-fi adapter ?

As for what you can get via the ethernet port, I use it mostly for accessing stored video on my home network though the performance on Youtube is very good .

One thing I am disappointed in, is they still have not extended the number of available widgets . Every night at 4 . 00 am the TV reports back to Samsung and every day I'm hoping for things like TVNZondemand etc - no such luck .

Guess I'll have to send them another e-mail .

Ah - see how I'm confused? Yes, I meant wi-fi. But I didn't know it had an ethernet port. Mmm...that is a logical extension of wi-fi.

I'd wait for sony to release their new models, which should be soon, as the current range are very old .

1180219 2011-02-21 11:31:00 Stupid thing is, you can get ethernet based wireless devices that will do the job cheaper than a usb wireless adaptor. Not sure where in NZ though. 8ftmetalhaed (14526)

Youtube will still cost you $ in terms of broadband, however NZ traffic being generally free TV on demand and Sky on demand (if you have a sky subscription) should be free . But I would talk to your ISP and confirm this because some ISP still want to charge you .
