1179995 2011-02-20 09:35:00 So got a kitten, had her just over a week. She is now 7 weeks and 1 day old. For the first day she was fine using litter box, then had a rough couple, then good for 4-5 days and now today she has been really really lazy and I'm gettin sick of it.

Is there anything I can do to help her learn? Atm I just hold her face right up next to it and growl at her but need to do something cos she sh**s about 20 times a day (is that even normal?) and only half of it is getin in the box.

She was litter box trained when I got her

Any ideas?

1179996 2011-02-20 09:41:00 6 weeks old is very young to be separated from its Mother. Kittens should not poo 20x a day. Maybe the change in diet at your place has upset her guts or she has a tummy bug.

What are you feeding her? Are you giving her cows milk?

She is not doing it to be naughty, so growling at her won't help. It is right up there with those that think rubbing a kittens face in its poo will help toilet train it. :groan:

1179997 2011-02-20 09:51:00 Hmm readin up it would seem it is quite young . She had kitten milk, mainly because she was just off feeding from mum . I have stopped giivng it to her so maybe she is adjusting .

Shes currently eating kitten biscuits and a small amount of whiskers kitten meat stuff 3 times a day . She got the same feedin routine with her previous owners .

Maybe not 20 times a day (frustration = exageration  ) but it would be pushing towards 10 .

If telling off wont help what can I do? I was prepared for accidents around the house but not this often!

1179998 2011-02-20 10:02:00 Well you have only had her a week, and she may still be settling in herself. This article, Kitten toilet training (www.catsofaustralia.com) has some good tips (even though she was supposed to be already toilet trained).

Does she look bright and healthy?

1179999 2011-02-20 10:14:00 Just read through that article, very useful thanks. It is a bit harder because im at work 5 days a week and usually away for the night a couple nights a week so I rely on flatmates to run around after her. They're pretty good about it though.

She seems very happy and healthy, she is full of energy, getting a bit keen with her teeth but I guess that's another kitten thing. Other than her toilet issues she is the happiest kitten in the world.

I did have the litter box near her bed and sorta close to her food so have moved it away a bit and she was with me when I did it so hopefully she knows. Hasnt moved far though.

I will have to tell the others that growling is bad, I would of thought tellin them off would help but can see how it's not a deliberate thing.

Thanks for your help Jen

1180000 2011-02-20 18:57:00 Take her to the vet, she has a gastro illness . She should poo once a day .

Cows milk gives them the runs but the actual cat milk you get in the supermarket shouldn't cause it .

Don't have litter trays next to food areas .

Gradually move the tray nearer the door, then out the door, then down the steps and into the garden . Like over a period of days - not hours .

Take her for walks round your section, kittens get scared when out on their own at first . (They're small and everything else is huge)
Make sure she has an area to poo in - lawn won't do - they can't dig it . A small patch of sand or dig a bit of lawn up . That will encourage her .

Any area an accident occurs - don't clean with any ammonia based product - that indicates to them it's the proper spot .

Rubbing noses in it and so on, doesn't work . makes sense to you, not to the cat . That will just make her scared of you .

1180001 2011-02-20 23:12:00 I rang the vet this morning, she needed to be booked in for vacination anyway so thats next monday. She seemed to think that as long as she appears bright and happy there isnt a problem and she may still be adjusting to new home. They do a full check up apparently when they're vacinated so that should show any probs. atm she is playing with a paper bag with a tiny amount of cat meat in it, very cute.

Shes way to small and young to be going outside, shes taken a couple of trips running around the deck and stuff and is keen to be running around outside but I dont trust her out there yet. Will wait another month or so before pushing that further.

Shes never had cows milk, was giving her small amounts of kitten milk stuff.

Cheers for the help!

1180002 2011-02-20 23:26:00 Atm I just hold her face right up next to it and growl at her

That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard.

Would you want to go near a toilet if someone shoved your head in it and yelled at you? Didn't think so.

1180003 2011-02-20 23:29:00 Settle down, I am only going by what Ive been told by various people. It is a common myth so forgive me for falling for it hueybot3000 (3646)
1180004 2011-02-20 23:31:00 Don't know a lot about raising cats, but that seems logical to me... wratterus (105)
