| 1180641 | 2011-02-25 05:26:00 | We recommend a knighthood for dedicated community service? But this is NZ so the police would make sure that they bankrupt the person first for the cost of their defense in the process.. |

Some of those lives could have been saved. The #$@%&*@ Mayor -:groan: The youth of ChCh have been absolutely remarkable, Christchurch's future is in good hands and will rise again. The way the communities rallied and reached out to each other made me so proud to be a cantabrian. The Aussie's - thousands of messages of support from all over the internet, and their rescue teams, and PM Gillard - absolutely awesome neighbours. I used to be a real "knocker' where they were concerned, not any more, no way. John Key - another I've changed my mind about, wish he was our ChCh Mayor, he's the only politician that has given me any confidence that we'll be okay, even though it may take time. I've voted Labour for years, not any more. We got done in the Sept quake. This latest one left us alone thank god. So numb, feel like the quakes are following me around. The one day I was in hospital last year, it got hit by one of the quakes, got out of there damned quick. The one time I go to my aunt's place [first time in a couple of years] to take her out on Boxing day, her place gets hit by a quake. The day ChCh got hit on 22nd, I was in the hornby supermarket when it got hit. But I'm lucky, because all my family are alive and well. My tears are for those families who have lost loved ones, those who are still waiting for news of family who haven't been found yet, those who totally lost their homes, their jobs, and who can't get any answers or decisions in order to get back on their feet again. |

He doesnt seem to do much usually but he definitely stands up when it comes to earthquake stuff, don't know how much sleep the guy is on but he definitely knows what he's doing, he's had practice now as well. John Key is doing ok but any chance to get his face on tv and he's there anyway, he'l be more worried about money than peoples lives, as per usual. |

| 1180644 | 2011-02-25 22:09:00 | We have a more than able Mayor, Police District Commander (as was also the case in Pike River), Chief of Defence, service organisations and international support people, all highly trained. Our PM is showing exceptional skills at managing the situation, and is getting favourable foreign press as a Statesman. That's from my post #183 - IMHO worth repeating. Hueybot3000, I don't think it's fair to accuse John Key of grandstanding. If anything, it's the media actively pursuing him, and at the end of the day, he is where the buck stops. Being without TV, you probably didn't see the press conference with Bob Parker, Wayne Mapp and Judith Collins. If there was anyone grandstanding it was the two Ministers, and Bob Parker had to elbow them out of the way to get the conference back on track, i.e. focusing on Christchurch. Would've been funny if it wasn't so appallingly crass. :2cents: |

| 1180646 | 2011-02-25 22:24:00 | I think Parker has done a great job as usual. John Key, meh, don't care much for him but he's done alright I suppose. That one cop, someone Lawry I think it was, fat guy, is a prick though. Saw a few days ago he said he was 100% certain no one was alive in the CTV building and I think later that day or the next day they said they received a text from someone in there. Is he the Pike River cop? I honestly don't think anyone is in any position (especially that early on) to say no one is alive. Sure, pull back if it's not safe but don't say no one is alive because people can survive amazing things. Other than that, both One and 3 News have done a great job. Especially liking Mike McRoberts (anyone see the interview he did on his brother?) and John Campbell, even the Nightline girl who I never really thought was anything spectacular. As for at home, water pressure is extremely low but at least we have water. Still no internet. Some petrol stations have been running out of fuel. But things are slowly starting to get back to normal (at home anyway) |

| 1180647 | 2011-02-25 23:52:00 | Power/internet was back 2 days ago, our water pressure is maybe 80%. House is largely undamaged except I suspect a broken sewer pipe feeding the toilet at the back of the house as it backs up. We have another toilet that is unaffected and I believe its before the break heading to the street so all good. I have been working in Civil Defence, the CBD is munted on the East side. Over the Avon River Art gallery side largely looks fine except the odd historic building. With nearly all of the limited use old brick buildings in the CBD about to be removed, I feel it presents CHCH with a opportunity to rebuild the the CBD with safe modern commercial spaces that could well revitalise the inner city medium to long term. A ton has been planned and learnt from since September 4th, having the more damaging shock 2nd is somewhat of a advantage although not immediately obvious. |
