| 1180258 | 2011-03-09 10:07:00 | There have been alot of retailers go bust over the last 10-20 years, leaving vouchers & store credits worthless. Plenty of media coverage on these in the previous years. Buy a voucher, you take the risk. Perhaps its time to ban retail vouchers or put the funds into some sort of trust. Surely prepaid debit Visa cards are the way to go now ?? But it was stupid on their part. All these angry voucher holders may never buy from these stores ever again. Why not just honor the vouchers. It wont have an immediate effect on cashflow & chances are voucher holders may have made another purchase while in the store. My understanding was that it would have an immediate (as in within 1-3 months) effect on cashflow, and it was their attempt to make just enough difference to the cashflow to prevent them from actually running out of cash while the administrators figure out what to do next. As such it does make some sense and the alternative may be bankruptcy in which case voucher holders would almost certainly get nothing anyway. |

| 1180259 | 2011-03-09 10:40:00 | Popped into the Whitcoulls at Wellington Airport last night on the way back to Auckland. Thought I'd have a browse and see if there was anything worth picking up since my phone battery was getting a bit low (ad I can only read books on it for a short time anyway, since they make you turn off "electronic equipment" at take-off and landing). I was totally unsurprised to find out why they're going broke: $40 for a ****ing paperback!!! You have to be joking! Cheapest I found was $29.99 (apart from the $10 junk bin)!!! It's a wonder anybody buys books any more! **** me! Glad I've gone digital! |
