1180221 2011-02-21 18:19:00 Plus I don't mind giving a plug for the Invercargill branch of Noel Leeming. The manager volunteers to support Habitat For Humanity, the NL Group sponsored the charity, and the sales manager (whom I know personally) has been a totally decent man to me for years.

Excellent service from this shop. :clap

So I support good service and they match or come close to Hardly Normal most of the time. Not that I need much in the way of appliances now. :D
I have just bought a new Surround Sound System from Harvey Normans and got a good deal paying cash. I usually by from NL as I have FlyBys, but as NL don't have seperate components I went to HN.

1180222 2011-02-21 21:18:00 Ah - see how I'm confused? Yes, I meant wi-fi. But I didn't know it had an ethernet port. Mmm...that is a logical extension of wi-fi.

I bought an LG 42in LCD several months ago and considered getting the wireless dongle but opted for a 5m ethernet cable from DSE for around $40. Clipped it around a door frame so it is barely visible. As you know, tv internet is limited to around 10 sites, YouTube, Facebook, Aljazeera, Picassa, movies, radio, etc. I don't use it much now as the novelty has worn off. Occasionally it is nice to show visitors YouTubes, Facebook and Aljazeera, but our broadband connection in the evening is not super fast and videos can lag. When internet tv has more sites and when our broadband connection is faster, then I may use interent tv more. In any case, if you have a spare $200 for the dongle, get it, but you may find that you don't use it much.

BTW, I was like you: Looking at all the tv screens in a shop, I found the LCD's to have the best picture and above all, without the annoying reflection of plasmas.

1180223 2011-02-22 08:48:00 Thanks for the advice everyone. I've discovered the "proprietory" thing is the USB wi-fi dongle and other wi-fi connectors don't have the drivers required by Samsung.

No problem because as Strommer says, a cable under the floor to the ethernet port will do the job.

Interestingly today, the TV I looked at has disappeared from NL's site, and when I visited the shop, it was gone. Sold. Snooze and you loose. Last one. :D

No worries, no hurry, just kicking tyres. What the shops should be able to do (but don't of course) is display various signals so we can see a real-world picture. Not just blue-ray. Standard TV, Sky digital, MySky digital, Freeview HD, etc. I'm told these all have increasing levels of clarity but without seeing them, how can you know?

Buying a large flat-screen TV on trial sounds possible but is it practical? How many sets would you have to try to be satisfied.

I must say the TV3 coverage on a low-end 42 plasma I saw today was not impressive. Very blurred.
