| 1179616 | 2011-02-18 21:25:00 | Oh, that is good. The price of SD cards is usually better I think. I was sort of comparing the onboard memory of the eReader with my old Nano, in the sense that what I do there is only load the music that I am currently obsessing over, or that would be good on a plane trip. I assume that I would do the same with the reader - most books would be on my PC, and I would only move them on to the reader when I wanted to carry them with me/read them in bed. I assumed that this is what you used the expansion slot for - transfer - but I forgot that this thing has got a usb connection for transfer. I used to own a Palm Treo (ownership now assumed by SWMBO...) and had a SD card in that - it really slowed down performance compared with on board material, so I see what you mean. Erayd, where did you buy your Sony? We seem to have a dearth of Sony outlets these days. BTW, I checked the Gutenberg project website last night - first time for a long time - and was gob-smacked by the amount of material on there now. Woohoo! Audio books too - maybe I can get someone to read me to sleep. Perhaps Natasha from Russia is on there somewhere... |

No they are not :) We use Calibre ebook (http://calibre-ebook.com/) to transfer the books to the kobo Reader - There are countless free ones available, SWMBO has never brought one yet. Shes into these thriller, murder,Mystery, romance :wub books. The only thing she doesn't like about it, is she cant take it into the bath when shes having a soak, in case she falls asleep :sleep (and she does) and it dropped in the water. She even told me -- that an electronic ebook and bath water wouldn't work to well together. -- Smart woman. |

| 1179618 | 2011-02-18 22:11:00 | That's good WT. From what I have seen of: a) free books - an absolute multitude of good books out there, and b) books for purchase - the price of an ebook from a seller like Whitcoulls isn't much cheaper than the paper book! I will be focussing on the free stuff! |

| 1179621 | 2011-02-19 08:45:00 | Great thread. I see that Billy has posted an eReader query here (www.pressf1.co.nz) that someone might like to answer as I am also interested. :) |

| 1179622 | 2011-02-19 09:00:00 | I can't find a Sony eReader 6" for love or money. Someone in Whitcoulls told me there was a world wide shortage. I went to Noel Leeming in Rangiora (being the only nearby supplier) to see the latest Kobo eReader, which now has WIFI added. I played with the demo model, though it wasn't working terribly well because the battery had been allowed to run down. It did what it says it does, the screen was clear enough, it was nice to handle - very light, good size, waffly back which is quite tactile. I couldn't try the WIFI of course. Unlike the Sony, it only has one expansion slot - an SD card. Controls were straightforward; fairly intuitive. Easy to alter the font size, which is a requirement of SWMBO. It felt like a blast from the past going back to a black and white screen - kind of like my old Mac Classic all those years ago. And of course, if you are just reading text, why would you want a colour screen? However, as I handed it back to the salesman, I couldn't help thinking "where is the $249 in that thing?" Somehow it felt like a rip off. So we are thinking about our options again... |

| 1179623 | 2011-02-19 09:13:00 | Well, I looked back at Billy's thread, and it is sort of amusing in a droll and laboured kind of way, unlike his Monday jokes. Our situation is that our local library has limited stock, and Herself has walloped her way through most of what she is interested in, in 18 months. That aside, because it caters for a small ratepayer base, there are heaps of books that it doesn't buy, or hold on its shelves. Secondly, in a year or two, we will be on fixed incomes, and we can see difficulties ahead in continuing to buy books, the price of books being what they are. So we have been wondering about other ways of accessing the volume and kind of books we both read. One was the eBook route, making use of the enormous stocks of free books on the 'net. Another is interloan, but that costs $5.00 a pop. The third, which Herself is investigating, is becoming a member again of the ChCh library as a non ratepayer. We used to get great service when we were ChCh ratepayers. Frequently we look up their online catalogue and find the books we want to read, but they are not in our local Waimakariri library because our library appears not to be able to afford them, or is not interested in adding them to their stock. Depending upon the cost of non ratepayer membership in ChCh, and the travel involved, it may still be economical to get an eReader by comparison. Unlike Billy, we aren't interested in wiping our bums or drying ourselves with books. Just reading the ones we are interested in. BTW, some eReaders seem to have bookmarking capability - I don't know if all do. |

Have you looked into audio books, all thats needed is a cheap mp3 player and an audio book supplier like www.audible.com (http:) |

| 1179625 | 2011-02-19 09:29:00 | Yes, we have some plod, that we bought years ago. But taste in books is really personal - we have heard some audiobooks where the reading is totally alien to the way you see the book, or reader is absolutely bloody terrible. And I know I am prejudiced, but saccharine American voices are just plain wrong for some books written and set in Britain! Especially those screechy American accents that are like finger nails down a chalkboard. There are a lot of free audiobooks in the Gutenburg project, so we can download those and use them with our present equipment (if they are OK!), but somehow I associate audio books with getting into our dotage and being unable to hold a book! It will take a bit of psychological adjustment to get used to that idea! :waughh: |
