2011-02-18 04:25:00 | I detest reading ebooks, I am sure it's enjoyable on a Kindle or a Galaxy tab or iPad, but I can't do it on a desktop or a laptop, I find it all too annoying. I use my phone. Have done for years: Palm Treo 600, 650, then iPhone, now Nexus One... :pf1mobmini:

2011-02-18 06:23:00 | I only get Lonely Planet books from the shops because I collect them when I travel. Very sparingly other books. I get them when they have sales. One time i got them from YHA (youth hostel website) because they were cheaper for a YHA member. Normal price IMO is about double in the shops. I personally haven't used Amazon but friends/family have. I have done the research, postal is quite cheap so you get so save 30-60%. I just wait when NZ shops have specials, I hav also signed up for Borders emails .. to get those discount vouchers. Most times I just go to the public library .... A lot of stuff, I don't see the point of owning. Fiction books, DVD videos, instructional books. Just reserve them (if required), read/watch them and return them .. and oh .. pay the $2 fee or what .. (which is cheaper than video rentals).

2011-02-18 07:59:00 | The issue is simple - Their prices are too high, their shops are dedicated to a lot of crap (toys? dvds? un bloody necessary.) and their actual book lists are terrible compared to places like mightyape.(as mentioned, and they were today, as per their facebook page, briefly interviewed on tv3's midday news.) And also fishpond, amazon, etc etc. As mentioned in the tv3 interview, mightyape's book dept has been their fastest growing for a while now. So it just goes to show not a lack of people reading, more a lack of people still willing to pay stupid prices for stupid books that only stupid people would be willing to read. (They'd have to be because they're also the stupid people who buy their junky toys and dvd's with ridiculous markups) /illegible rant about whitcoulls being dead but nothing of value being lost.

2011-02-18 10:39:00 | I have always thought we have been over charged for books here in NZ. You only have to go to a book shop, pick up a good book and turn it over and see the rrp in the UK or the USA ? There are just too many markups between the writer and the publisher and the retailer etc.

2011-02-18 18:46:00 | I have loads of books. I use bookzone.co.nz - support your local. BookDepository occasionally. Whitcoulls sucked because they didn't sell what I read.

2011-02-18 18:52:00 | They wouldn't accept my gift card at Whitcoulls at all this afternoon. :( Take goods to counter, hand over voucher and walk out. no worries.

2011-02-18 21:36:00 | Still buy lots of book, games, CD's and DVD's, but except for the rare spur of the moment purchase, I always buy online because they are generally much cheaper than Borders or Whitcoulls. I was in Borders in Auckland a few weeks back and they didn't have a single book on Windows 7 and I think one on Office 2010. They certainly didn't have books like O'Reilly's Windows 7 Definitive Guide, Office 2010 the missing manual, or the excellent Windows 7 Secrets. And if you are looking for a book on Ubuntu, you'll likely struggle to find one that is close to up to date. Supplier of choice these days is CD Wow (http://www.cdwow.co.nz/) - the price you pay is the price you see (in NZ dollars and no added postage) and doesn't seem to take long to arrive. I check out the New Zealand based sites like Fishpond but they are also generally more expensive. And I just see the have Build a Rocket Boys! (http://www.buildarocketboys.com)on pre-order, better get my order in.
