1179380 2011-02-18 00:36:00 I keep getting calls from Sky. As soon as they tell me that they are from Sky I tell them bluntly that I am not interested in Sky and that ends the call. I never get to hear what their special offer is and I do not want to.

I am set up for freeview with a satellite dish and a set top box. From memory my box has a slot for a card that can be inserted to unlock paid channels. Currently the Sky channels appear with $ signs. I just make the freeview channels my favourites so that Sky channels do not appear in the channel menu.

It would take very little to set someone in my situation up for sky if I wanted Sky.

1179381 2011-02-18 03:11:00 Doesn't vodafone have some offer like join them for broadband you get a deal on sky installation or something?

They sure do: www.vodafone.co.nz

It's how we got ours, I don't think we had to pay the $49 though, might have been an offer at the time.

Well worth getting MySky though, so much easier than using the VCR

1179383 2011-02-18 05:37:00 For MySky installations, Sky use 3 RG6 cables (could be 4 now?) to connect to a LNB that points at 3 (4) different transponders (in order to get the bandwidth required for HD). So they will have to install 2 new cables and the new LNB. pine-o-cleen (2955)

Not quite. The boxes have four tuners, and two cables. They also need new dual-LNBs that can see two satellites simultaneously (Optus D1 and C1 - they're offloading some content on to C1 now), hence the two cables. The boxes have an internal splitter, so can see up to four TP's at once in any config (D1/C1).

The dual LNBs have four outputs, sky only connects two of them (for now), the others might be there for multiroom installs.

Almost correct :D

MySkyHDi will use two of the outputs, eventually, as they are supposed to be moving the HD channels to C1.
The other two outputs on the quad LNB will most likely eventually be used for a home shopping network and interactive TV.
The interactive TV looks cool because you basically will be able to control what camera you want to be watching from.
EG: In an F1 race you could view the entire race from one of the cars.
In a football or rugby game you could select which player you want to follow.

Sounds great, but looks like a pie in the sky, that would require one hellova lotta bandwidth (a couple whole TP's at a guess, maybe three), admittedly C1 is pretty quiet ATM, but I can only see that happening on a handful of events. Do you know if there's any chance of DVB-S2 stuff on C1? That would help a bit, but knowing sky, they'll charge an arm and a leg for it, and slowly push it aside to make way for more of the same, because D1 is pretty full.

TL;DR Really? Neat if it goes ahead.

1179387 2011-02-18 21:02:00 A few years ago, I got a couple of phone calls to ask me to subscribe to Sky. When I asked if they supplied a tv to watch the programmes on, for some reason they weren't interested, can't understand it Whenu (9358)
1179388 2011-02-18 22:14:00 I look at the T Box from time to time but it annoys me they won't let you take the content off it across your network, and they lock down the USB port as well (unless things have changed). They don't seem to get that these days you might want to watch the content on another device or just on another TV. Mind you I don't try and watch Dexter on the train, never mind Californication.

As chances that I would want to record two things at a time off TV are slim, I am going to stick with my Pioneer DVD Recorder (which unfortunately doesn't have an ethernet port either, but at least I can get the content off it).

I nearly got it right. Nearly.
