1180581 2011-02-24 00:52:00 I have just seen Police Minister Collins and Defence Minister Mapp interviewed on TV One - Mapp elbowing the Mayor out of the way, and then the Mayor elbowing his way back in again "to reiterate what the Minister has just said".

Honestly, the two Ministers showed themselves to be unnecessary wallies. What is that expression about keeping your mouth closed because if you open it you confirm that you are an idiot? Something like that.

Collins and Mapp clearly showed themselves to be Johnny Come Latelies, just becoming aware of the reality of the disaster down here, and repeating what we have already known for at least 36 hours. Collins deferred any relevant questions for facts back to the local Police Superintendent.

The Mayor and John Key have shown that their role and skills are incredibly important - it would be far better if these flunky ministers bowed out, and left media handling to the Mayor and the PM, both of whom have the nous to do it properly. My heart sank when I heard the PM say he had freed up Brownlee to devote himself fully to the earthquake recovery portfolio. He has proved to be remarkably inept in that role thus far, and made a total fool of himself on his first visit to Kaiapoi (last week) since Sept.

1180582 2011-02-24 01:42:00 In my view the Minister who has shown himself to be the most inept is John Carter. Isn't Civil Defence meant to be the first point of reference for events like this? Yet he hasn't shown he is capable of managing the portfolio at all. Which is why we saw the petty politics at play with the aforementioned Parker/Mapp/Collins jockeying for position.

We have a more than able Mayor, Police District Commander (as was also the case in Pike River), Chief of Defence, service organisations and international support people, all highly trained. Our PM is showing exceptional skills at managing the situation, and is getting favourable foreign press as a Statesman.

Let the hangers-on bugger off and let the professionals do their job.

1180583 2011-02-24 01:52:00 Unsurprisingly (!) I agree with all you have said! I missed out Carter... The ones who really have a handle on what is going on on the ground are the Mayor, Key, and the professional leaders of the Police, Fire Service (with one notable exception), Director of Public Health etc etc.

All the pollies are just fluffing around trying to get camera time, and it is a pity to see the media hanging on their every word, when all their words have been said better already for a day and a half at least.

I started thinking whilst I was watching the lunchtime TV coverage that the National gene pool is just as shallow as the current Labour puddle. Very depressing. It is a bad time when we have successive governments where the only truly competent people are the prime ministers.

1180584 2011-02-24 02:32:00 "Panic buying of fuel is continuing in Christchurch, with reports of cars queuing for up to a kilometre outside petrol stations and motorists abusing forecourt staff."

Tut, tut.
The petrol attendants are in Ch/ch too, they probably have families in the same situation too.

Bit of politeness there would help.

1180585 2011-02-24 02:36:00 Not much point queuing for petrol where you going to drive the roads are all shot gary67 (56)
1180586 2011-02-24 02:43:00 Yep the only reason i would bother waiting for petrol is to get outta dodge

EDIT: I called a guy who does out design verifications today, his house is shot, but his business in mt pleasant (near epicenter) is ok but no power so cant work any way.

1180587 2011-02-24 02:47:00 I think Gobe is correct. Apart from the usual panic merchants who are staying put (and also probably stockpiling groceries and abusing the poor supermarket employees), there are many people leaving the city because their houses are uninhabitable.

Some have gone to Nelson, and have already enrolled their children in schools - they are open up there. I heard of others who have gone to Motueka.

We have no fuel in Woodend - I went to post some letters at the garage and found a couple of young lads chilling out in their car waiting for the tanker that was expected in about three hours. They had run out on their way back to ChCh to see Mum. So there are both sides to stories like this.
