1180560 2011-02-23 21:50:00 Its hard to fathom, Just watching it on TV is hard to do, I feel a dread in the pit of my stomach. All those lives lost, and the way it has happened. The ramifications will be so intense locally and will/have spread right through the country.

As for the Mayor, he's doing an astounding job under the hardest of conditions, Good on him for communicating the situation to the people, locally and nationwide, as well as doing everything else that will be being asked of him during this time.

1180561 2011-02-23 21:52:00 What I can’t understand is why so many, all decked out in their finest fluro’s, are just standing around or walking aimlessly in circles whilst the so called experts are all lining up to get on TV.

And I’d have a hell of a lot more respect for the Mayor if the cameras panned in to show him shifting rubble or doing something useful instead of entertaining the media.
Come on BM get real.

1180562 2011-02-23 21:56:00 You are right Siobhan and Metla on each of your points.

I have no time for Sideshow Bob - he only got back in as Mayor on the back of the first earthquake. However, he is working something like 24 hours a day without any observable sleep, and he is communicating as accurately as possible all of the important issues to the city, region, country, and the rest of the world. That is a vital role of leadership, and because he is a professional communicator, he does that aspect of his job really well.

Someone needs to do it, and be at the centre of things so everyone else knows what is going on, what needs the city has, and what has to be done. At all of these things, he is doing well.

As far as the opposition was concerned, Jim Anderton, I wonder whether he would have been able to cope with the physical demands on him in a crisis like this. So, credit where credit is due.

That is quite an ask Trev. You forget that BM is the international expert on search and rescue... Reality is not his forte. Uninformed 'opinion' is his thing.

1180564 2011-02-23 22:01:00 Agreed with you all, whether I agree with his politics or not Bob Parker is doing a fine job. Someone does have to front up to the media, after all, and I'd rather the experts handle the rescue and recovery while he answers the questions. Siobhan Keogh (16063)
1180565 2011-02-23 22:06:00 I remember during the Haiti earthquake thinking why the hell can't they announce the number of deaths. Thinking that it must be hard in a third world country.

So now I suppose, we can realise that it is not so easy.

And that rescue guy who came on tv with the local police office saying they were experts and there was no way there can be anyone alive in the CTV building, may have to eat his words, and lose this job. Never give up!

Deliberately targeting people who are trying their best to keep telecommunications up and help.

1180567 2011-02-23 22:13:00 Oh dear, I’ve upset some of the Hand-Wringers again.

Maybe they should have started the rescue mission with a Hui? :D

Are you basing that on the bodies they have found in the CTV building?

You merely shame yourself, you're just too ignorant to comprehend it.

I wonder how those on the ground would respond to your statement that they aren't working hard enough to appease you.
