1179606 2011-02-18 07:54:00 Is there anyone out there in computer land who is using an eReader? If so, what brand/model, and what is your experience of it?

Is anyone using an Android smartphone as an eReader, and if so what are the ups and downs?

Is it too soon to invest in something like this - my feeling at the moment is to wait a while to see what happens with the market/eReader designs. Do you agree?

The research I have done doesn't thrill me at the moment - the only one that seemed of interest was the larger of the two Sony models, but they do not have WIFI, and that seems pretty important to me.

BTW, I hope if any of you bought the Whitcoulls jobbie that you will still be able to access books for it...

Thanks for any thoughts or recommendations.

1179607 2011-02-18 07:58:00 SWMBO has one of the Whitcoulls ones since Xmas, and loves it - Kobo eReader

She never has used any of the Whitcoulls books, but has downloaded countless free ones from several places all over the internet, with no problems what so ever.Shes got more books on it than she'll ever be able to read this year and prob next as well

1179608 2011-02-18 07:59:00 I tried using the iphone but the screen is way too small to be comfortable. You either have to hold it to your nose to be able to make out the character, or you will have to be scrolling/page flicking every other second. I would assume this is true for all phones.

Samsung Galaxy Tab would be awesome for that, me thinks. However you could go for a cheaper Android tablet with a screen size of about 7"...

Because people are crying that if whitcoulls dies then so does their online e reader service.

Thx WT. I already have a lot of free Project Gutenberg books on my laptop, but it is a pain to read the laptop in bed!

My comment about Whitcoulls was about them (and Borders) coming under administration today. If they go under, I am not sure what will happen with their ebook service. I don't know whether the Kobo is restricted to a proprietary format - hopefully not.

That is what I suspected, but the Samsung devices have an awesome display. With the Sony ebook reader you can also increase the font size, which is quite attractive.

I haven't located a supplier for the Android tablet yet, except for people on TradeMe.

1179612 2011-02-18 09:03:00 Is there anyone out there in computer land who is using an eReader? If so, what brand/model, and what is your experience of it?I currently own a Sony PRS-650 (that's the current 6" touchscreen model). I've owned it since October, and have nothing but good to say about it - it's awesome. Lack of WiFi has never been an issue for me - in fact, I consider it a bonus, as it means a longer battery life.

Before the PRS-650 I owned a PRS-505 since early 2008 - again, this was a great device, although not quite as good as the 650.

Since owning an ebook reader, I tend to buy ebooks wherever possible - the dead tree versions are reserved for the absolute last resort.

I would never consider reading off a phone / tablet screen for long periods; e-ink is vastly superior.

If you have specific questions feel free to ask, I'm quite happy to answer them.

I think it's all personal preference though.... I was using a nokia 6210 Navigator (2" screen) for eBooks with no issues, and now comfirtably use my iPhone. Is all a matter of where your eyes focus. My phone were at a comfortable distance - so I see no reason why an android could not be used.

1179614 2011-02-18 19:26:00 Thanks Erayd, that is great. That is the one model that has attracted me thus far, so it is good to have confirmation that it is worth pursuing.

I notice that there is another model coming out with WIFI and a larger screen - thus far I have only seen one outlet advertising it, so I may wait a bit to see what happens with it.

SWMBO likes the way that you can alter the size of the reading font - she now prefers larger font sizes (or at least not those teensy fonts you sometimes come across in books).

The thing I like about it is the built in dictionaries. We occasionally come across words that we still don't know the meaning of, but because you are engrossed in a story, it is too disruptive to go and get the dictionary. If you have the dictionary built in as it is in the Sony, it is a snip to just look it up as you go.

I suppose the expansion slot is for one of those stupid Sony memory sticks?

Thanks again - I will get back to you if I have any other questions.

One of them is - there are actually two slots. One is for Memory Stick, the other takes standard SD or SDHC cards.

Note that your battery life will take a bit of a hit if you use a memory card. You're unlikely to want one unless you want to load a *lot* of books though - the 650 has 2GB of onboard memory, and most books are under a meg in size.

I agree with you about the dictionaries - extremely handy!
