1211541 2011-06-24 00:03:00 I have a friend who has a laptop that needs a backup plan.

she got a 1TB external drive at DSE but now want a point and click tool to do backups.

the aim is just to sync/backup "mydocuments" not whole drive.

anyone recommend a backup tool?

requirements:
1. free.
2. windows 7.
3. easy, she is not a tech person.
4. scheduled, would be nice but we can work around this one.

1211548 2011-06-24 03:04:00 But is there one that will automatically maintain a selected number of versions of a folder? Just too small a safety margin otherwise. linw (53)
1211549 2011-06-24 03:14:00 I would use the Windows 7 built in backup as it takes a full image of the whole system not just the user data.
So it can be used to recover the machine if the HDD fails or whatever.
Pretty sure it also does versions as the backup will use up all the space on the backup drive before it starts removing old backups. Haven't actually tested this though...

1211550 2011-06-24 04:22:00 Must say I have switched my thinking to images as well. There is heaps of space on a terabyte drive and you don't have to worry about where the darn email is!

I have been using Macrium Reflect (paid) and it can keep a selectable no. of backups.

Must investigate W7 further. If it will manage full disks I would be tempted to create a backup partition on the 1TB HDD of, say, 500GB and leave it to it.
