2011-02-26 04:02:00 | I was driving home from the town today and some dickhead did a u turn right in front of me. I jumped on the brakes and came to a stop about 30 cms from his car. If I hadn't stopped in time he would have been history because he was directly side on. As I jumped on the brakes my cars front wheels locked up and smoke poured from the tyres as I skidded about 5 or 6 metres. He then pulled on around and continued on his way without even stopping to apologise or to see if I was ok. A man in a following vehicle did stop and asked if I was alright, which was nice of him. I was a bit shaken up but otherwise fine. I now need at least one new tyre, and would there be any damage to brake pads or linings? LL

2011-02-26 04:34:00 | Much sympathy LWL! I had the opposite problem a while ago coming back from Hokitika to ChCh. I had stopped at the one way bridge at Kelly's Creek to let a car through as it had right of way. Whilst I was awaiting that car I saw in my rear view mirror a car in the same attitude as yours - steaming towards me with brakes locked, smoke coming off in clouds, skidding without slowing down, and I was stuck between the car ahead of me on the bridge, and the dickhead behind. Obviously he had not slowed down in anticipation of the one way bridge... Those give way signs aren't important... there won't be anything on the bridge, will there? For some reason the dickhead's front wheels kind of dug in, and the car sort of "tripped over itself" and slewed off to the right. I also crabbed as much space as I could get as the car came over the bridge and then floored it as a big enough space showed itself. Shaking for ages afterwards, so I appreciate how you feel.

2011-02-26 04:35:00 | Was it a cop? The guy who stopped was a motor mechanic and the one who stuffed up my day was just a regular dude in a plum coloured station wagon. I will know if I ever see him again. I might even have rude words to say! LL

2011-02-26 04:37:00 | Was it a cop? I remember a few years ago in Upper Hutt when the Traffic School was at Trentham. I was following one of those trainee traffic cops along Ferguson Drive when all of a sudden he moved over to the left and did a dangerous U turn in front of me. I had to apply the brakes. I did not care if he was a cop he got a horn blast from me and an angry wave.

2011-02-26 07:15:00 | when i worked in auckland i used to get that at least once a month :( poor work van had severely flat spotted tires. amazing the amount of people who look straight at you and pull out. tho last week i almost sat the ute on the doorhandles of a ute doing a u turn in the middle of the intersection. 5 meters away was a big empty carpark/turning bay. bloody lazy drivers.

Fortunately it was back in the days of solid old cars and no-one was hurt. In fact my car just had a tiny dent in the overrider. Inconsiderate guy, not stopping for you. |
