1182558	2011-03-02 20:22:00	There was a time when our national anthem was "God Save The Queen" and "God Defend NZ" was the alternative national anthem. (snip) God Save the Queen was our national anthem, so that was what got sung everywhere, even at the bloody movies... It meant that at the Olympics, God Save the Queen was sung for any NZ gold medal ceremony, which seemed plain wrong to a lot of people, especially since we were no longer a dominion. I think God Defend NZ was referred to as the national song. At Munich, when the rowing eights won gold, for the first time the band struck up God Defend NZ, and for most if not all of us it was a complete surprise. I remember it was a very emotional time. I am not sure if that accounted for all the tears and emotion by the winning crew, but I suspect it did. I don't know what changed to allow the playing of God Defend NZ - perhaps you are right about a law change? Now someone please tell me I have misremembered!	John H (8)
1182559	2011-03-02 21:02:00	Take god out of it and there isn't much left............. Invoking god to fight for us doesn't sit well with me, in fact it is arrogantly pathetic. Possibly you haven't noticed but currently we don't have much of a defence force left. That's why we need God on our side.	Snorkbox (15764)
