Think you'll find some white text there... :)

Duh! Sense of humour (if this is humour!) is a bit strained at the moment, given the circumstances down here. Thanks johcar. Sorry RB - you got me.

1181930 2011-02-28 02:23:00 HOW IT ALL HAPPENED

Scene – Boardroom table, late 1960s. Yet another meeting about the new building
_______________________________

Wise Old Engineer - We have completed the design. Based on the wisdom of the ancients, and
generations of engineering experience, I am confident that the design shown in these drawings
(presents plans, reminiscent of a pyramid)) will stand the test of time and be a modest memorial to
remind future generations of our collective skills in moving civilization forward in this great city.
Old Mr Gould - Great, I like it. But whats it going to cost?
Nerdy Quantity Surveyor - I have calculated that it will cost $5,754,334.29.
Stunned silence around the table-------------------------
WOE – And I suppose there needs to be a contingency on top of that?
NQS – Of course not (sounds offended) , I calculated the exact cost.
OMG – Perhaps I could have a word to Muldoon about raising the SMPs on wool and lamb? Now
that he’s got rid of all that decimal currency nonsense.
Sharp Nails Contractor – I say Sir, can I make a suggestion. Smug Young Engineer on my team here,
has some new ideas about construction details. If we did it this way (presents plans, in colour), plus
delete some of that not-entirely-required decoration, I believe we could meet you budget.
Slightly Gay Architect – The decorative elements are essential to the meaning and cultural
symbolism of the entire edifice. It is the plains, mountains, rivers and trees of this great land
assembled into one mighty sculpture, topped by a 1960s stylism of the Gould family crest.
SNC - I would like to suggest that all the lines should be straight, just like a big pile of money
stacked up high.
OMG – I think I can relate to that. It might be a bit ugly, but I suppose that’s the price of progress.
SGA - Well really. I don’t know why I bothered. I am not even going to tell you about my great
ideas for the doorknobs (Leaves in a huff).
WOE – (Looks up from slide-rule) I have just been going through these proposed details - I don’t
see how they are going to achieve enough earthquake resistance for a building of this size.
SYE - It meets the new code . I’ve worked it all out on my new-fangled pocket calculator. I can
prove it, every number to 8 significant points. OMG – Earthquakes? – but don’t you just take your chances, like back on the farm? Lightning
never strikes twice in the same place, and all that. Let’s get to the point – what’s it going to cost?
NQS – While you were gazing out the window, I have revised my price to $3,694,122, but I’ll need
another half hour to get the cents part done.
OMG – I was a young man when we started this project. Let’s get on with it, before that Wright
Stephenson outfit make another takeover bid.
WOE – Look, SYE may be right that it meets the letter of the code, but the fact is that its all
theoretical stuff that’s never been tested. If we have a decent earthquake, the whole building will
probably collapse.
SNC – Sir, the bottom line is this. Our design is legal, it has nice straight lines, we wont have any
more trouble from that poofter architect, and I give you my word that we will build this exactly to
your budget. I’m having lunch with the City Engineer and can have the permit to you by 3 o’clock,
and boys will be on site on Monday.
SGA – (appears at door) Tell you what, I’ll come back on the team if we can use the Paisley print
wallpapers. (SGA is totally ignored by others)
OMG – So if there is no architect on the job, can I let Mrs Gould do the interior décor? She does a
nice a line in browns and tans – going to be very fashionable I understand.
WOE – Hang on a minute, I think you have all missed the point here. Earthquake, building
collapse, huge loss of live. Its just not worth the risk OMG – what about your reputation? What
about the march of civilization?
OMG – I hear what you say WOE, and you did polish my shoes every morning at Christs College
back in the 20s. But we just don’t have earthquakes here, and we are all getting a bit old and tired.
WOE – But even if it doesn’t collapse, what about liquefaction? Its right on the edge of the river.
SYE – Is the Avon really a river? Let me calculate that, I’m sure we can make it float.
WOE - This is madness. Insurance for negligence is one thing, but I think I’m going to have to read
the fine print.
SNC - We have it all covered. My insurer will take on the total risk, for a small margin of course,
he’s as solid as a rock and and promises to still be in business no matter what.
WOE - But…..
OMG – Come on now WOE, lets just leave the whole business to the Bright Young Things, and I’ll
shout you dinner down at the club.
SNC - (Shakes hands with OMG) You wont regret it, I promise you.

Even for you, that comment is pretty obscure.

Surely both of a nonsensical order, illustrating the mad world in which we live.

True it does require an ability to see beyond our noses, which clearly is not the case with this esteemed mob.

I was not aware of that. Amongst many things. I think I will bow out of this thread whilst I have tatters of self respect left.
