1212466 2011-06-27 12:50:00 our cabinet's at the bottom of our street, about 50m away.

before they 'upgraded' it(moved it closer actually) speedtest usually topped out at 4.5-5mbps, now it tops out at 6-6.5mbps.

'should' it be any higher??, im assuming the router has a part to play?
Yes, it should, my nearest cabinet would be 200 metres (ish) away, when they turned it on in April I went from 6.4 to 13Mbps.
Are the modem and router ADSL2+ capable? Try resetting it/them (usually a recessed button in the back), you may need to reinstall your user id and password.
Before you do that though, check your status page in your modem, should look something like this..

1212467 2011-06-27 13:01:00 OP, your speed is good.

Here's my speed test done on my laptop from the wifi connection. We are with Trustpower Kinect and have a full speed unlimited usage connection.

www.speedtest.net

thats our average speed, it's normally faster though.

1212468 2011-06-27 21:01:00 @ OP - those speeds = the best speeds I get on TelstraClear adsl2.

However, I do not know where you live - here in North Canterbury there is a bottleneck problem that has a major effect on speeds. In the morning you will will get that sort of speed, but in the evening you can be down to dialup speeds when everyone is on line. They are trying to fix it now, but it may be a slow process.

I suggest you do a speed test at 7am, noon, and 8pm, for comparison purposes. If you are getting the speeds you originally posted at all times of the day, you are doing well (or Telecom is, on your behalf).

As feersumendjinn mentioned, yes, almost definitely. It *ought* to be in the 10mbps + range, especially at that distance, though remember the cables don't specifically run in a straight line from the Cabinet to your premises.

House cabling can have a huge part to play, as can routers, faulty connection boxes on the wall in your home (Also falls under wiring), dodgy dsl filters.. I'd say the #1 issue would be a router, #2 would be home wiring.

Post the results from your routers Status page, and we can take it from there :)

1212470 2011-06-27 21:58:00 I am about 400m from the cabinet and get 14.5Mbps so I am happy.

As for getting what you pay for, be careful what you wish for. 3Mbps would be fine from an ISP point of view!

Old modems are often stuck at ADSL1 speeds so, in my experience, a new modem can break that limitation.

1212473 2011-06-27 22:56:00 as a point of interest, there was a chorus van outside our house digging up a cable.

the chorus guy said there was a problem with the cable running along the front of our property and that it would be replaced at some point, dont know when. although this was a couple weeks or so ago.

1212475 2011-06-27 23:10:00 GameJunkie: Going by your line stats it looks like your router is in ADSL mode or can only do ADSL.

Switch to ADSL2+ mode or get a newer router and you should get a speed increase.
