1182548 2011-03-01 00:58:00 Take god out of it and there isn't much left.............

Invoking god to fight for us doesn't sit well with me, in fact it is arrogantly pathetic.

1182550 2011-03-01 01:15:00 I've lived in NZ off and on for around 50 years. Patriotic to the core to my adopted homeland, for the very first time I heard the full version of our National Anthem today.

It was broadcast on Newstalk ZB following today's 2 minute silence for the people of Christchurch. Until today, I'd always regarded the anthem as a dirge to end all dirges. But no more. Here's the words

God of nations! at Thy feet

In the bonds of love we meet,

Hear our voices, we entreat,

God defend our Free Land.

Guard Pacific's triple star,

From the shafts of strife and war,

Make her praises heard afar,

God defend New Zealand

Men of ev'ry creed and race

Gather here before Thy face,

Asking Thee to bless this place,

God defend our Free Land.

From dissension, envy, hate,

And corruption guard our State,

Make our country good and great,

God defend New Zealand.

Peace, not war, shall be our boast,

But, should foes assail our coast,

Make us then a mighty host,

God defend our Free Land.

Lord of battles in thy might,

Put our enemies to flight,

Let our cause be just and right,

God defend New Zealand.

Let our love for Thee increase,

May Thy blessings never cease,

Give us plenty, give us peace,

God defend our Free Land.

From dishonour and from shame

Guard our country's spotless name

Crown her with immortal fame,

God defend New Zealand.

May our mountains ever be

Freedom's ramparts on the sea,

Make us faithful unto Thee,

God defend our Free Land.

Guide her in the nations' van,

Preaching love and truth to man,

Working out Thy Glorious plan,

God defend New Zealand.
Thanks for that never seen the full edition.
Makes me all patriotic and want to tear up

Yes thanks for that.

At the rugby etc we only ever hear the first verse, so its great to see it all.

Its good to be patriotic.

That version they played on ZB at 1pm was quite good by Cindy Ruakore.

1182552 2011-03-01 01:42:00 My understanding was that it meant New Zealand's three main islands. However, unless we can confirm with Thomas Bracken, it can't be confirmed.

I know all the verses. When I was at school we sang them all. We used to get told off if we weren't singing loud enough. I'm not sure whether the pc mob have arrogantly decided to take it upon themselves to overturn that sort of thing.

Sung well enough it doesn't have to sound like a dirge.

Why on earth do you have to make reference to "the pc mob"? I wish I understood how this mythical clique have apparently taken over NZ. Perhaps they secretly run the ABs. Anyone who watches internationals will get my reference.

Well that's what you get when a poem written by and Irishman and set to music by a Tasmanian is penned for posterity in the mid 1870's (which is just after 7:10pm!;))

1182554 2011-03-02 07:55:00 here's a link to the song on youtube, with words, including the first verse in maori: www.youtube.com

you can download it for free from cindy ruakere's site: http://www.cindyruakere.com/

i heard this version for the first time after the 2 mins silence and found it very moving. i've seen a couple of people saying that it's supposed to be played as a dirge, but i don't see why when this is so uplifting.

1182555 2011-03-02 08:10:00 There was a time when our national anthem was "God Save The Queen" and "God Defend NZ" was the alternative national anthem.

Although I realise that "God Defend NZ" is now used as our national anthem, I wonder if that fact has been confirmed by a law change, or is "God Defend NZ" still on the books as our alternative national anthem?
