1181179 2011-02-24 07:34:00 S.S.ERLANGEN This was a 2750 ton iron hulled German steamship, built by Blohm und Voss,at Hamburg 1889.She was 321 ft long with a 38ft beam, and her triple expansion engine could deliver 320hp.She was described as a twin deck steel screw schooner, mastered by Captain E Oohnsorg. She sank during a storm in 1894 while on a voyage from Cylon to Germany fully laden.

Technically yes but they had run into an Englander warship HMS Newcastle. In one of the most epic sea journeys of the 20th century. I feel so sorry for the crew they were finally homeward bound when this tragedy happened.
I have been to Erlangen clearing twice and the place overwhelms me.
Think the crew would appreciate they havent been forgotten about.

So we can then just ignore the facts???

1181182 2011-02-24 08:41:00 Sorry Prefect, but what part of "there is no such word as 'englanders' don't you understand?

It is comic book slang, potentially offensive, and something you may regret if sailing in mixed company . It is a bit like signwriting a boat "In memory of HMS Cheshire, sunk by the krauts 25 July 1941' then sailing it in a Jerry regatta . It could lead to some seriously unsportsmanlike behaviour .

Since it appears that the British did not sink this ship, it is also a deliberate misrepresentation of the truth and may diminish your stature in the eyes of those who might currently respect you .

Sometimes feelings strongly held should be just that, held, and not made public unnecessarily . You are inviting adverse comment in respect of genocide in Poland, Russia, Germany and a number of other european states . Several million members of the Hebrew faith might take offence as well, if they had not been exterminated . And yes, I used the words Kraut and Jerry intentionally, but deliberately did not use the N word .

By all means inscribe a memorial to the vessel and its crew, but leave the manner of its sinking silent, especially since it seems possible that it was scuttled, in which case it is its own Captain who deserves your opprobrium, not the vessel and crew who might otherwise have taken it as a prize of war with no loss of life .

Some may remember the sinking of the Athenia, a passenger liner carrying 1400 pasengers and torpedoed by a German U-Boat at 9pm on September 3rd 1939, an echo of the sinking of the Lusitania on 7 May 1915 killing 1,198 of the 1,959 people aboard, again by a German U Boat .

Let he who is without sin . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

picasaweb.google.com

This was last year I was support crew got horribly pissed and hung over during the day.
I have a catarmaran this year with 3 seagulls on the back want to get to the finish quicker so can party up more. Spending all day on the river for 2 days doesnt appeal to me much.
Was a team from Bermuda seagull racing big over there man did the girl put some rum away
Not enough room on sign for scuttled under the guns of an english warship so run with sunk because thats ulimately what happened.
Last year there was a Tirpitz I wouldnt have picked that one

1181184 2011-02-25 20:16:00 I have seen the term 'Englander' in war comic German . Most likely referred to anybody from the British Commonwealth .

I did find this site ( . wikipedia . org/wiki/Englander" target="_blank">en . wikipedia . org) .
