I cant understand what people see in most of those "heritage" buildings. I think the cathedral is the only one worth spending any money on rebuilding

1182418 2011-03-10 03:16:00 The Catholic Cathedral was a very beautiful building, when you see the tilt block buildings/monstrosities that the 'heritage buildings' will be replaced with you won't be so cavalier about having them all pulled down, but it will be too late by then. zqwerty (97)
1182419 2011-03-10 03:27:00 I may be a philistine but most of this "heritage" building frenzy to me is somewhat overdone. After all these buildings are not old, not really really old, like the timber built pub from 1386 that the Midland Jazz club used to play in for a while, or like many old Roman or Norman buildings around, or old Saxon churches, or 'millions' of old thatched cottages in UK from the 16th/17th/18th centuries :)

I say pull them all down, certainly not spend rate or tax payers money on them.

There used to be a road in the centre of Milan that was in daily use until the mid 70s, vehicles driving over it, built by the Romans. City authorities decided to close it to traffic as it was beginning to wear. :clap

Not just a question of age, the type of buiding was very Ch Ch and loved by all, tourist included.

1182420 2011-03-10 03:57:00 I'm sure Weta Workshops could build lightweight replicas, indistinguishable from the original.....
One problem with strengthening existing old builds is the lack of flexibility. Apparently strengthened old builds will fail suddenly when the safe loadings are exceeded, whereas a new building can have flexibility.

There is no reason why new buildings cannot be built in whatever style the good citizens of CHCH desire, they don't have to be monstrosities just because they are new.
Just give the appropriate mandate to the architects.

For example, from what I remember, new buildings in parts of Bath UK had to be build in the existing Regency style, even the colour of the stone and paintwork was proscribed.

Ch Ch was one of the few places in Nz that a distinctive appearence.

I suspect there will be a lot of dicussion and advice from all of the world, I doubt it will become a tilt slab city Zaqwer.

Possibly not "forbidden", Terry, more likely "prescribed" ;)

1182423 2011-03-10 04:08:00 You have repeatedly assured us that Ken Ring is wrong and that the position of other planets has no effect on the Earth.

However, you still haven’t explained Summer & Winter and the rise and fall of the tides, given that other planets have no effect.

Just think Battlenetter2 you could revolutionise science and become a legend.

The effect of near by Celestial Objects on each other is scientific fact and not in dispute, also nothing to do with Earthquakes.
