1182532 2011-03-01 02:19:00 I have just installed an el cheapo pvr. It has a usb outlet for recording purposes (it isn't freeview approved, but it works brilliantly from the UHF aerial. I assume that if it was freeview approved, there wouldn't be access to an external recording device).

Could someone who has been recording HD programmes please give me a guide to file sizes e.g. a half hour programme, and a full size movie?

At the moment I have a 16Gb pendrive installed as the usb device, and was intending to just transfer anything I want to keep to my PC. But is a flash drive satisfactory, and is 16Gb of any use, or should I purchase an external usb drive? (I understand that it needs to be separately powered rather than powered through the freeview decoder.)

Thanks for any advice.

1182533 2011-03-01 03:09:00 I don't know about your device but it's 2GB for a half hour in HD with PlayTV so it's probably something similar. Siobhan Keogh (16063)
1182534 2011-03-01 03:33:00 Thanks Siobhan. I thought it might have been much more than that for an HD broadcast. John H (8)
1182535 2011-03-01 06:56:00 Yup I've recorded a few HD programs with the tuner in this. Its about 1 GB for every 30 - 45 mins (MP4). So, you'll probably end up with a 4 GB (or just under) file with 1 movie (a 2 hr movie) Speedy Gonzales (78)
1182536 2011-03-01 07:19:00 About 4 gb an hour for TV1/TV2 and 6gb and hour or tv3.

I've just looked at my coasters recording off tv one - 30 min program with 5 mins of padding either side = 40 mins and it seems to be about 3.2 gb.

CSI miami off tv 3, 1 hr with 5 mins of padding each time (1:10) = pretty much 6gb on the dot.

C4/prime etc will be less.

1182537 2011-03-01 08:58:00 Thanks folks. I could get the odd programme or two onto my usb stick, but I think I sense disasters ahead. I think I will buy an external powered USB drive - I saw DSE had one for $88 (I think it was WD 500Gb). That should do the trick.

If I can get this darned thing to record, that is. It isn't responding to the Record button, but it does record to the USB stick if I use the Timeslip button. Perhaps I should read the manual. Don't know why though, everything else worked fine just using instinct...

Thanks again. If I go with the 6Gb figure, all should be apples.
