Now there's an arrrggghh. ouch-- Been there as well :D

The problem I had was I assigned the same static IP to two computers. My servers are set to the higher range, the security Cams, and printers are set slightly lower, so basically leaving over 200 IP address available, good luck or bad planning I picked a random IP address that came to me and assigned two to the same IP - then wonder why things didn't work to well :D Dhurrrrrr ;)

I'm putting it down to the bang on the head resulting in a trip to hospital- rattling the noggin :)

1463179 2019-08-19 22:15:00 Ouch. SWMBO?

Ken :) That's What I been telling people - I didn't duck fast enough :D SWMBO says keep saying that and She will thump me.

Truth is (Previous Weekend) I was up a ladder, next thing I remember the ladder went one way I went straight down (insert swear words) landing on the steps, split my head open above the eye, blood everywhere - Massive bruise on left arm, and a few other places, wrenched shoulder , ribs sore as hell. Didn't want to go to hospital but got told in no uncertain terms by SWMBO I WAS going. No broken bones but damn sore.

Dr said had a bit of concussion so no driving or work for at least 48 Hours.

We went and brought a new much more solid ladder this weekend just gone, one of those ones that adjust for different heights / uneven surfaces (like steps)

So guess the title of this thread applies to that as well.

1463180 2019-08-19 23:48:00 The most panic one I had was at Akld UNi. 2 whole buildings down, it was the oldest, mish mash network too, all sorts of hideous stuff inc cat 2 (!!) and such. Such a nightmare undocumented tangle of who knows what, and of course a 60 min max fix job.
me and the IT guy from that faculty ran around like headless chickens, we traced it to a certain section in th end but nothing seemed to cure it.
I swapped out switches etc..

Finally, duh, I swapped the fibre card in the back of the switch. Which had been the issue.

When I swapped the switches, I had reused the same card, you see, so of course it didn’t help.

Faculty heads were not impressed to say the least.

know the feeling about undocumented cables :waughh: Job I did a few years back, whole building had been wired previously (3 floors) all coming to a point with a rather large and un-tagged loom of wires where the Server cabinets / rack Switches and Routers had once been.

The boss of the place said only need to have this floor connected -- Errrrrrrrrr yeah OK (that made it harder) , He asked if there was anything he could do to help - Yep -- OK I put the line tester in one outlet - went into the room where the loom came out, and of course all of the plugs had been cut off :waughh: he made some comment like this should be easy -- OK looking at the loom - which cable plate is the tester plugged into at the other end, and which cable do I crimp on a new plug, there's at least 20 outlets on this floor alone ??

Funny he disappeared and never came back - Wonder why ;)

)

LOL .
This faculty was worse, 5 buildings in total, one OK, the others were old heritage houses (converted) so we weren't allowed to rip it all out .
It had been patched, added to, built on, it was a maze of nightmarish rubbish .
Ports split, hubs daisy chained, cat 2, 3, 4, 5 .

Stuff all over the place and no map of what the hell connected to where .

In fact I had to go into one hobbit door once, hands and knees, no worries I was told, keep going and eventually you come to a pull cord light bulb . Yep, you did, eventually . I discovered (by the voices), that this tunnel came out under seating in one of the auditoriums, the step down seating, and I was under it . Thats were the patch panel was . Oh such fun .

Years after I left they finally got the buildings removed and a flash new glass tower was built and all the networking done properly . I never got to see it though .

1463183 2019-08-20 09:31:00 Does anyone remember Multiplex (the wonder idea)? Back in late 1980s or early 1990s we had it. Problem was if one end fails all fail.
We had a recurring problem many days. Worked fine then next morning not working. The reason turned out to be that each night the outsourced cleaner pulled out plug in factory Manager's office to plug in her vacuum cleaner.
Another time we had a 3 day search with no luck then our Gen Mgr casually mentioned to me he had been in his office at weekend and used a hammer etc to retack up carpet which had come loose (partway from floor to wall) That was the cause of he problem
