1460565 2019-05-08 22:51:00 I have discovered that a number of my Verbatim DVD-RW discs have a perfectly circular scratch on them. Basically a very thin light coloured line, Just outside the central area of the disc, but into the recorded area. Picture attached.

The "scratch" will not rub off. Presumably one of my DVD players/recorders has something in it that rubs on the disc? All the scratched discs have the scratch in exactly the same place. Any thoughts about the cause please?9604

1460566 2019-05-08 23:14:00 I'm not sure that's a scratch and not a factory feature.
I don't have any discs handy to check but I recall there's an inner data track that has things like write speed, capacity, manufacturer details , etc on it. What you are seeing might just be a separation between that and the actual data part of the disc.

Edit, found a DVD-R and it doesn't have as defined of a line but there is definitely a thin band on the inside at the same spot that looks different from the rest of the data area

Thats the most likely cause, assuming is is a scratch.

Otherwise , it could be
manufacturing defect : it was like that from new
or , not a scratch but a separatation between 2 burn(write) sessions .

Personally , I wouldnt trust DVD Rewriteables regardless , not for anything important such as PC Backups

1460568 2019-05-09 04:52:00 I think it is a normal feature.

I have similar rings on both blank CDs and DVDs

I'm thinking the same now. The circle looks too perfect for it to be something in the drive causing it. All my Verbatim DVD-RW discs have it, some used a lot, and others not much. What you say seems to clinch it Zippity.

1460570 2019-05-09 09:26:00 It's part of the design. Nothing to worry about. Agent_24 (57)
1460571 2019-05-15 09:18:00 I'm guessing it's a physical (factory built) division between the data area (outer part) and the file allocation / directory info area at the centre (CD/DVD's read from the inside to the outside, unlike vinyl records, which read from the outside to the inside - how's that for useless info? I asssume Blu-Ray does the same). Paul.Cov (425)
