1460145 2019-04-24 21:53:00 Whats the difference?
Chromecast
Anycast

How do you chromecast from Linux (MKChromecast doesn't work)

Also, we had 2 MP4 files, so I put them on a usb stick and plugged into TV.
One plays, the other says Unsupported file format.

Why? Both MP4...both 720 apparently.

1460146 2019-04-24 22:46:00 Can't say much about the Chromecast question, I have one but only use it on Windows.

As for the .mp4's download this portable app and after starting it drag and drop the .mp4's in question into the window.

1460147 2019-04-24 23:09:00 re Chromcast -- have you tried using Google Chrome ( Browser) its inbuilt.

Other players may need some sort of addin to work. Linux doesn't have all the installed functions by default. Tried it once a few years back to use Linux as the base for the media center, but gave up after having to load in this that and the other just to get different OS's to talk.

Re the MP4 -- Do a google search for "some mp4 files won't play on tv" theres plenty of answers, basically it boils down to the containers in MP4 not being compatible, in the way it was coded, some TV brands are al;so described as to whats needed. There are also convertors that will sort the problem.

Got several over the years, same problem, given up on those types of connections, just use a purpose built Media center thats under the TV (they can be small these days) and play /show almost anything including Netflix or from any of my servers.

We tried Chrome but he has an Anycast gadget which may be the issue, I also got VLC...but it won't see it.
So he has ordered an actual Chromecast.

MP4s, weird....I was thinking that too, some media player gadget.
Less hassle. hate playing on TV, so much easier on computers.
They read any format, and Linux doesn't care what the device is formatted in either, unlike stupid TVs.

Dont know if you have seen this article, ( just found it) Apart from making sure you have the latest VLC, scroll down the page to VLC.

May or may not work.

Had one person once trying to get Chromecast to work, all the self proclaimed "experts" were baffled

When looking the first thing was it was a desktop PC -- No Wireless. :badpc: Plugged in a USB Wireless adaptor and what ya know worked instantly. Sometimes ( as you will know) you JUST have to physically see a problem ;)

Heres my Office PC scanning, of course it wont find anything as its a Ethernet connection.

1460150 2019-04-25 02:04:00 I can certainly cast from the Chrome browser on my desktop (which does not have wireless) to the chromecast device on my TV. I just tried it to see. Everything is, of course, on the same network. CliveM (6007)
1460151 2019-04-25 02:32:00 As I said, tried VLC and Chrome. Doesn't see his device which is why he's now getting an actual Chromecast rather than the generic one. piroska (17583)
1460152 2019-04-25 02:56:00 I can certainly cast from the Chrome browser on my desktop (which does not have wireless) to the chromecast device on my TV. I just tried it to see. Everything is, of course, on the same network.May depend on the hardware. Just tried it again on two PC's one an older laptop and this PC, The laptop is wireless, and cant detect anything, the PC is newer while it can see all network devices it wont cast (similar to chromecast).

Even when trying as suggested ---> www.howtogeek.com

All I get is this, and of course it doesn't have Wireless.

Give me a Dedicated Media Center ANY DAY, WAY less hassles and works a whole lot better, and plays ANYTHING that's playable. :D

1460153 2019-04-25 04:04:00 Ok Wai my setup uses Chrome browser to cast from my PC to a ChromeCast device on the TV and it works perfectly. I believe that it is designed to do so. More usually I use my Android devices to cast You Tube to the TV which also is problem free. It is all simple to set up and use so I see little point in attempting to do it any other way. Of course I only have to know and use my own gear where as you have to sort out a vast selection of different devices for clients who often have limited understanding of them. I have learnt a lot from your very clear explanations and I have often been impressed by your patience and the amount of time you spend helping all and any that ask for it. CliveM (6007)
1460154 2019-04-25 04:50:00 Ok Wai my setup uses Chrome browser to cast from my PC to a ChromeCast device on the TV and it works perfectly.

Thats perfectly fine if thats how its setup. But casting to a TV has a lot of disadvantages and mucking about.

How I have this setup is simple, there is a Media center PC under the TV cabinet. I have done several for others and they have found it a lot easier and not requiring all sorts of devices. These days you can get devices so small you may lose them if your not careful

Last one I did cost around $100 for the PC, OS and the guy can stream from it on every device in the house, He gave it a workout by playing 5 different movies and music at once to the kids rooms, bedroom etc, handled it without a glitch :) (ex lease Desktop PC)

The Media Center can connect directly to ANY network server /PC / Storage and grab what ever - music, Movies etc. It Can(And Does play Netflix) You Tube, live TV you name it.

What ever works for whom ever is whats used. :)
