| 1463713 | 2019-09-17 06:03:00 | Yes I also noticed that Press F1 was down for a week. At the same time another forum I follow in a different field also went down with a blank Screen from a web host I suppose. I was very sad about both events. At the same time I had received a request for a donation to another forum (in a different field). That sight is full of ads for products. So I emailed them that I did not mind giving a small donation but why was I asked to give a fairly high monthly donation? He replied that there were 4 people working full time on the site who needed a living wage (in the USA) and that they were "Fighting" other sites such as Facebook groups, Reddit and Blogs. I then did some research... on Google "Are forums dying:" And found that it seems to be a bit of a trend. The reasons are that forums are basically old software that has not been updated. everyone is on mobile phone (I'm not) and they don't look so good, its hard to register, and people spend most of their online time on Facebook and other social media. Also the time involved maintaining a site (anti spam etc and the hosting costs) will make a small site like Press F1 as bit marginal. I also often think that most of our members are getting on a bit. Not many young ones comng through. Also, with instant help available from Google, I don't use Press F1 Help that often. I do appreciate some of the help I have had But I do like the camaraderie on PC World Chat. |
