1460090 2019-04-22 23:41:00 "NZ isps dont throttle traffic"

I wonder, my ADSL speed has dropped as I decided not to get fibre after being asked to do so by Spark, but I want a landline as they were the only communication that worked after the earthquakes for a few days, cell phones all overloaded and text's very slow, we still get that sometimes text's sent on one days don't arrive to the next day or never.

I expected my ADSL to speed up as everyone else moved to fibre but my ADSL has slowed down.

There will be something else at play here. You're definitely not getting throttled, but it really does make sense to get Fibre.

1460091 2019-04-22 23:55:00 Not if you saw my physical location, an old peoples' retirement village off a blind street onto a circular drive with about 23 units on the drive. To run the fibre they would have to dig a trench on the beautiful newly laid tarmac, earthquake payout, people freaked out when there was a brake fluid spill in 4 or 5 places on said driveway claiming that their property values would drop when/if they wanted to sell, because of the stain, cat litter and some sort of solvent was used for months and combined with the action of the sun it is now hard to see.

It's like an island of units surrounded by private owners houses.

About 50 metres of driveway flanked by neighbors fences and gardens, make it so a Ditch Witch is the only other option. Have tried to speak to Chorus but they were not available so spoke to ISP and they poo-poo'd the problem and dismissed that there was a problem.

I was assigned by the Body Corporate to check out the details of getting fibre for the community but I gave up because of the ISP's being so dismissive of my concerns. Everyones still on ADSL here LOL.

1460092 2019-04-23 00:07:00 Are you sure they have to trench? a lot of fibre is installed by thrusting underground with no surface disturbance.
A lot depends on the terrain and layout of the subdivision and I have heard some horror stories of poor installation and poor restoration of the ground so there are definitely concerns, but they absolutely should be able to install fibre without detracting from the general appearance of the area.

1460093 2019-04-23 00:16:00 This whole complex was only built in about 2005 so we have new underground wiring for phones, the ADSL was much faster when I first got here in 2014 and periodically speeds up for short times on and off through the month. The ONT (the green termination tube type structure which is the main terminal for the fibre) is about 100 metres away from me so not exactly just a matter of running the fibre through the garden or whatever.

There's no crackling on the phone the connection sounds good. I have done speed tests, I think about 15 down and 3-4 up were the figures, the usual units on the speed tests.

My friend just got fibre and I am not really impressed with the speed, doesn't seem that much faster than mine although a download of say, Firefox 40 megs, which I upgrade often, I am on the beta channel, is about twice as fast as my setup.

I've decided it's not really worth the effort and hassle for a saving of about 10 or 20 seconds.

1460094 2019-04-23 00:43:00 Well I couldn't possibly comment on your particular address and it's specific issues but in general when UFB lay fibre in an area they run tubes to the boundary of every property ready for future use and can then just blow the fibre through them. That is for regular type sections of course but they do have solutions for most situations. Not all fibre distribution points are above ground and obvious, many are in pits with lids flush to the ground. ONT normally refers to the unit on your house, not the other end of it.

I'm not trying to talk you into anything though, totally your choice and as I said I have heard some horror stories. Should you decide you want it though I'm sure it can be done and if a poor job is done you should be able to make them sort it out. I know of someone who was very unhappy with his lawn and the contractors half arsed restoration of it (it had recently been professionally laid) and kept on them as well as providing a quote from his own contractor to fix it properly. They eventually fixed it all up at their expense.

The sales people always forget  to tell people that. They generally try to sell the bottom end plans which cost the same or similar to what someone is getting with ADSL.

What they don't tell them is if you want the top end = more speed, then you need to pay more for it.

We get them all the time around here trying to change over, I simply say (along the lines) what speed are you offering - The reply (usually) upto 200Mbps, So I reply why would I want to go slower ?? Usually get a whaaaa look - I tell them I'm on FibreX Max and getting approx. 900Mbps.

As for the original range extender (cant see B.M's post) but get the gist from others replies, they are only as good as the top end your router can send out, if the internet is coming in at a certain rate, there's no way any extender can produce more than the source- its impossible.

1460096 2019-04-23 02:04:00 Yeah that's true, I went from VDSL to fibre and picked the 100M plan because the base plan would have been slower than the 60 or so I got on VDSL. dugimodo (138)
1460097 2019-04-23 09:38:00 The road the community is located on is a private road, the Body Corporate is in charge of the general running of things.

There are definitely no pipes trenched, the closest fibre terminal is on another road at the entrance to the road I am talking about.

Everyone here is over 60 years old, should be 65 now, and on a fixed income; nobody, including me, has spare money for faster internet beyond what we already pay for ADSL I'm afraid.

I was here when the fibre was first made available in this suburb and watched to see what they would do, they never came up our lane unfortunately.

There are strong WiFi signals close to me I would be better off to locate someone on the outside who has fibre and WiFi running from the streets all around us and offer to pay half to use their signal.

Have a look at Spark's Wireless Broadband plans. One just might suit your circumstances.
