1183575 2011-03-07 02:46:00 Then again - if the AV was any good in the first place, it wouldn't get infected - :D And as we all know, infections are getting past and infecting even though installed are "Good / The Best" programs.

I agree, but to be thorough in the testing, you'd need to prove that the "any good" AV *does* in fact detect & prevent the attempted infection, before letting it get to the stage of needing cleanup ;)

Perhaps we could start collecting a "list" of places you can get infected from? :D

1183578 2011-03-07 03:11:00 You guys do raise a good point though. I think norton's primary failings will be due to the users. If it comes bog standard on so many retail pc's (my first included) then it's only natural for users to assume 'well it's there so it's fine', as long as they keep it subscribed. They won't be fussed about it updating because it's automatic, nor are they too fussed scanning, and they'll ignore any warnings about installing software because they'll have the mindset of 'it's got nomtons so it's ok even if it gets a virus it will stop it'

I would guess that this is where the primary causes of it falling over come from. Yeah sure it might fall over itself sometimes, but more often than not, it'll be the users neglecting to hold it up.
On the other hand, Eset is an unknown antivirus, requiring people to actively seek it out to purchase it.
Anyone who DOES know to go after it is likely to also know how to update manually, scan every week and not install downloaded files without scanning them first.

In this regard, my Norton's only ever given me a couple of gripes. It's picked up more than its fair share of nasties, and only ever missed one due to it being a basic piece of annoyance-ware which apparently millions of people have so it was marked ok.

Performance is another matter though. If you have an under specced machine and are trying to multitask, it just won't work.
Hence another reason why it'll fall over. If you leave it to its own devices it's fine but if it tries scanning while you're browsing, you're likely to stop the scan and not bother setting it up later.

ZARA - in post # 29 the question was asked
Hi Wainutech,

1. Could you please provide references for your claim?

I'm game to prove a point.

I posted a screen shot of a site that Nod32 stopped dead in its tracks #46 The screen shot Nod working (www.imagef1.net.nz) -- So I thought, what the hell, why not.

On a workshop Computer installed Norton 2011 the one thats "the best" in the PCWorld latest review, updated it, please note arrows on the following screen shot AND the actual address in the browser - then went to that web site and Damn near pissed myself laughing (www.imagef1.net.nz) -- So theres the proof as requested = Norton total crap- didn't even bat an eyelid.

1183584 2011-03-07 04:49:00 For interest I went to that site to see if MSSE would pick it up immediately like Nod, it didn't. The site started up a scanner called Windows Security, which before I killed it, said I had numerous evil beings residing on my system. Terry Porritt (14)
